Chapter 8: Tobias POV (again)

I sit there staring blankly at Matthew as if what he just said was spoken in a foreign language. His lips were moving, but I couldn't hear anything besides the beats of the clock pounding inside my head, warning me of the few deadly minutes left to make the fatal decision.

Tick, tock, tick, tock.

I quickly make a pros and cons list in my head of what would happen if I chose to go through with the surgery.

Pros:
-Tris will get better
-She won't be in pain anymore
-She will be cleared of the death serum once and for all

Cons:
-She could die because of her being in a coma
-I might never see her eyes open again
-I might lose her forever

Tick, tock, tick, tock. 3 more minutes.

Then I made a list for if I choose not to go through with the surgery.

Pros:
-She wouldn't die
-She wouldn't have to heal from a surgery.
-She would be awake soon

Cons:
-She would be permanently paralyzed
-Things would never be the same
-She would hate me for not taking a risk for her
-She would still have traces of the death serum
-She probably wouldn't live too long
-She would suffer for the rest of her life

The lists could go on and on and on.

"Times up Four. What's it going to be?" Matthew says.

I look up into his eyes trying to figure out an answer. Even through my glassy eyes, I can tell he's trying to tell me something. I look at him trying to figure out what he's hinting at.

I searched his eyes with all my might, looking for the answer to come, but it was hopeless. I gave up.

Last time I was in this hospital was when Tris almost died. I remember the very moment I lost all my hope until I heard her weak, gentle voice whisper my name. She was too stubborn to let death beat her. I just hope she can find that same determination to stay alive.

My head shot up as I looked at Matthew with realization. That was it. He was reminding me that no matter what happened to Tris, she always fought her way back to me. She is a strong and courageous girl. I now knew what I had to do.

"Four, what's it gonna be?" Matthew said, clipboard and pen I'm hand. I take a deep breath. I knew she wouldn't want to live paralyzed. The choice was obvious. Tris is a fighter.

"Okay," I said with a voice as shaky as an earthquake. My voice changes to determination.

"Start the operation."
