When her bridal package arrived, before she opened it, Halima sat down and cried. This sort of made it realer than ever for her that she was marrying Jamal. She however wiped her tears before unknotting the huge now wrapped around the box.
It was a ivory colored rectangular box with hee name penned down in glitter and calligraphy. When she opened it, it had a note so she kept that aside. On the top was the blue asoebi they had chosen eventually for the Kamu ceremony after much deliberation so, she put it on the chair beside her after looking at it with so much joy.
"What are you doing?" She looked at her mother as she removed the noisy wrapping paper that separated the asoebi from the main gifts.
"I'm unboxing my bride's box." Her mother sat beside her and placed the asoebi on the low coffee table. When Halima finished taking off the wrapping paper, she gasped in surprise. The box contained, a lemon body scrub in a glass bottle, a water cooling bottle, a mug, a pen, a notepad and a foot scrub all with her name on it.
"This is beautiful." Halima nodded. It sure was. She said a wow as she opened the scrub and smelled it. It was good stuff.
"Them Hajarah got something like this oo." She told her mother as she opened the enveloped note. Her mother hummed in reply. But she put down the envelope when Safeenah came into the room.
"Anty." Halima eyed the eight year old. She cleared her throat and said sweetly. "Ya Sadiyya." Halima raised her brows but this time it was Halima's mother who answered Halima.
"What is your problem? Let her call you whatever she wants." Halima chuckled and waved Safeenah on.
"Can i go out with you today?" Halima drew down her lips in surprise. "When did we start going out together?" Halima asked her when she saw her face.
"Well,-" She could not talk anymore because Halima's mother interrupted again. "Let her go with you. Ah! You can't even take your sister out?" Halima whipped her head to look at her mother. She decided to keep quiet after staring at her mother's face. She didn't want to disrespect her mother or make hwr mother look disrespected in front of Safeenah.
"Take your bath, get dressed and get ready." She picked up the envelope again the moment Safeenah left the living room. She set down the envelope on her lap, wondered for a second what her mother had said, exhaled and continued to open the envelope. She didn't care to know what her mother had planned.
Lee,
I thank the Almighty Allah, Jary, Lubna and my mother for bring you to me. I could never had managed such an amazing person all by myself, so-
Alhamdulillahi robil halamin.
I know for sure that you're one of my best decisions and everytime I remember you, happiness blooms in me. This means to me that spending the rest of my life with you is going to be a long stretch of happiness and joy.
All the love from here,
Jamal
P.s Your Jam-Jam or Jammy since I see you haven't nicknamed me.
Halima laughed out loud at his ending and picked out her phone to take a photo of the letter. She immediately sent it to Jamal himself with the caption, 'You wrote this?'. Then she sent it again to Summayah who said. 'I'm so posting this. If I don't have a husband to send me sweet messages I at least have a brother who has sense.'
Halima laughed so hard at her statement and got up to take her bath when her phone pinged. Jamal had replied. 'What do you think?' She smiled and texted back 'Thank you so much. In light of many mind-tiring things that happened yesterday, I truly needed that.'
As she walked to her room with the box her phone pinged again. 'Well. Alhamdulillahi for quick thinking. What are you doing today?' He asked.
She set down the box in the passage and texted back. 'I'm going to see Kemi(my fashion designer) with Safeenah.' He answered before she picked up the box. 'When exactly?' She answered after thinking.
'In one hour.' She lifted the box, took it to her room and left it there. She took out the face scrub and scooped some unto her face. She was a baby with new things, she just had to use it.
"I'm done bathing. Should I wear this gown or this one?" Halima turned to the door from the vanity mirror. "Wear the grey one." She answered. "But I don't have a black scarf to pair it with!" Halima sighed and called Safeenah back to give her a black silk scarf.
"Can you tie it?" She asked her. The young girl shook her head and Halima asked her to wait for her to return from the bathroom.
"Wear your dress and cream your body." Were her parting words as she left the room. When she returned from bathing, she met Safeenah playing with her phone.
"Who called?" Because she saw a missed call sign. "Your husband." Halima turned back and faced Safeenah. "Husband to be you mean?" Safeenah smiled at her and shrugged. Halima sighed and continued to pack her body products to use in the closet.
As she creamed her body, she wondered how Safeenah had grown in wisdom overtime. Even as an almost nine year old, she behaved like a twelve year old in speech, in character and nearly everything. Halima knew it came from surviving the streets as an almajira at a young age. She had to toughen up or die trying.
After dressing, she went to the mirror and wrapped her hijab, fixing it in place with a fake diamond encrusted pin. She turned to face Safeenah who was waiting with the silk scarf draped on her lap.
"Next time. You fold it like this." She folded two ends. "You wrap it around your head, then tie it and begin styling." Then she went ahead to style the scarf in an slightly elaborate style. When she finished, Safeenah went to the mirror and thanked Halima for the scarf.
A few minutes later, they were stepping out of the gate. Halima saw a four wheel drive idling at the gate. She stopped and took out hee phone from the pocket of her gown.
"Jamal?" Jamal's voice sent tingles to her heart but she tamped down on it and asked him. "Did you send me a car?" When he didn't reply on time, she knew Summayah must have told him something. So she didn't shoot the messenger, she would deal with Summayah later.
After thanking Jamal, they set off.

Jamal walked into his office and met the man there. He pursed his lips at Salim who didn't notify him and sent Salim off, he needed to deal with this alone.
"Good Afternoon." He began and walked to his seat, he crossed his arms in front of chest akimbo. The person whispered something. Jamal's head just nearly went on fire.
"What?" He watched the person nod. Jamal scoffed and leaned back in his seat.
"So you can't wait?" He watched him shake his head. When he shook his head, the annoyance Jamal was trying to tamp down bubbled out jn full steam.
"What do you mean you can't wait? How can't you wait?" Jamal demanded. When he heard the person's words he wished he could raise his hand but he crossed his arms again.
"So, the best thing you could think of was to break her heart like this? Do you know how she's going to feel? You!" He could not finish his sentence. Instead he got up, took the keys to his private elevator and stormed out. He knew he needed time alone or he would pound that person to pulp.
