"Mummy."

Halima sat the basket she brought on the side table and went to sit beside her mother-in-law. She wrapped her left hand around hers.

"How are you?" Halima nodded and watched her face. "I'm fine. Everyone is fine, we miss you." She nodded. Halima observed that she didn't even look at her properly, instead she was looking as though she needed someone else.

"How's Amirah?" Halima smiled and said that her mother was on the way to the hospital. Just as she spoke, her phone rang and she unwrapped their hands and went to get her mother.

"Ma." Halima called on her mother as they stood side by side in the elevator that took them to the floor Jamal's mother was on.

"Please talk to her. She's so unhappy. And she really deserves happiness." Halima's mother nodded and when the elevator stopped, they stepped off it and walked to the private room down the hall way.

"Assalamualaikum." Her mother greeted when they got into the room. Halima walked forward and adjusted her mother-in-law's bed so she would not have to strain her neck.

"Walaikum Salam." She greeted back when she was settled and they both sat observing one another. Then Halima's mother turned to her and asked her. "Have you spoken to your husband since he left for work?" Halima shook her head and her mother bent down and picked a heeled slipper to throw at Halima.

"Didn't I tell you to call him many times? How will you build a relationship with him if you don't speak to one another often?" She took off the other and flung it Halima again. This time it hit her square on the face. "Move out! Go and call your husband." Halima laughed and shut the door behind her. She knew her mother was sending her out without telling her explicitly, she knew within herself. She was too much of her mother's daughter not to know.

So she stood outside the door for a few seconds, trying to hear what was being said, but shutting the door had effectively cut off all communication. She could not hear a word of what was being said. So, she huffed and went to the balcony where the hospital arranged a set of very comfortable chairs and adjusted herself properly in one and did as her mother had said.

"Hello." She greeted when he picked. "Heyo Lee. What's up?" Halima searched her head but came up with nothing. "Nothing is up. I just wanted to hear your voice. I miss you." Jamal sighed softly.

"I miss you too. I wish I could wind back time and help mum before she fainted. We would have gone on that mini honeymoon in Prague. Instead of me rushing back to work like this." Halima sighed in reply. She then said. "Well, Prague is still waiting and we'll enjoy it when mummy is better and won't make us worry whilst we're traveling." Jamal hummed in agreement.

"Are you busy?" She asked him. "Yes. But I'd spare a few minutes for you. You want to talk about something?" He asked her and she heard the shuffling of papers.

"Well, you know I got my rent money from Summayah? So, I wanted to ask when it would be the right moment to send her a cheque to clear off the debt." She offered. "Would taking out that money affect you business?" Halima didn't answer, she was busy doing calculations in her head. "Well not exactly. I might struggle for a month or two. But it will get better."

Jamal tsked and stated. "No. If it would do your business harm. Don't try it. Did she say say she'd need the money urgently?" He asked.

"No. She gave me about two years to pay it off. It's a huge sum. I'm even surprised I have it back so soon." Jamal chuckled and said that if his sister didn't need the money urgently, she should use the money to think of expanding the business or keep trying to double the money by making more profit.

"I'll do that. When do you get off work?" He laughed at her question. "I'll get off before seven, but I'll have to bring some work home. How's that?" She said it was fine by her.

"How's Mummy?" She laughed and told him the episode between her and her mother. "She shooed me outside. I can't hear what is being said although I very much want to hear it." Jamal laughed very hard at her narration and said in reply that "Knowing your mom, she's probably telling her what she doesn't want to hear a.k.a the truth. So, let them talk. We'll see at home, I have a meeting in five minutes." They exchanged more pleasantries and ended the call.

Just as she put her phone down, her mother's phone call came in. "Come and open the flask you brought." Halima chuckled and shook her head as she cut the call. Mothers would never change.

"Daddy!"

Lubna called whilst they ate dinner. Jamal stopped cutting into his chicken and dropped his utensils. "Yes Lubby." He concentrated all of his attention on her. Her guidance counselor at school had said that one of the problems of having a very smart elder sibling was how left out Lubna would always feel whereas her elder sister would get everything she wanted by just speaking up.

"We don't want aunty Maryam as our nanny again." She drew on the last word. Focusing on her dodo. Halima stopped eating.

"Lubby why?" Lubby put two fried pieces of fried plantains into her mouth before replying. "I don't like her anymore." She answered after chewing.

"Lubby, you can't just not like someone. Why?" Lubby huffed and put some more plantain into her mouth. She looked pointedly at Jariyah and shrugged. Her lips and hands were coated in oil.

"Well Daddy. Aunty Maryam wants to marry you." Jamal who had began to spoon food into his mouth choked on the process of swallowing.

"Halima. That girl goes today! This very day. Ask Salim to tell you the agency we use and interview another person. Preferably someone with no designs on me. What rubbish?" Halima didn't speak. She looked between Jamal and his children who were looking as innocent as they could and Jamal himself who was very angry.

How on Earth did Maryam get to this point?

"Kemziiiiii" Halima greeted immediately Kemi's call came in. She put her earphones on ans continued to part Lubna's hair that she was plaiting and adding beads to.

"I'm fine." She replied Kemi's question. "Really?" She narrowed her eyes and asked Jariyah to turn on the television. "Take it to Two-five-four." She ordered softly. Jariyah did as she had told.

The youngest ever to be made deputy chief of army staff. He fought front line in the battle against Boko Haram and now has been decorated as a Major General in accordance to his new duty as a deputy chief of army staff. We here at channels television wish him the very best.

Halima's hand dropped. One more obstacle to get over. One more wall to scale. Would they even get justice at this rate?

*******

Captain made deputy chief of staff? Or no He's now a Major General. It would have been beautiful if he was not such a vile human.

Also, thoughts thoughts? Would you rather be noticed or be left alone in your own world? I'd like both😂😂😂

Anyway, I'll post a new chapter when I'm done writing it. See you guys very very soon. Love you.
