28th June.
Kemi's call woke Halima from her peaceful slumber, she had woken up to pray Fajr, she prayed some nawafils and mistakenly fell asleep on her praying mat. She was regretting it since she woke up to aches all over her back.
"Hello Kemi Kemo." Kemi laughed out loud before replying Halima. "Madam, good morning. I hope you've bathed. Today is your photoshoot." Halima smiled and said she was just waking up. She knew Kemi would have her head.
"Well, you have till ten before you get made up. So, quickly bathe, don't apply any makeup. Just lipgloss Abeg. We need you to there early and on time." Halima laughed again because she knew it would be impossible to start at ten. She had a nine am appointment at the salon, and she had not even bathed yet.
She got up, said her morning azkar and walked to her wardrobe to find a flowing gown to wear. The day was looking stressful enough and she needed to be as comfortable as possible. A few seconds later, she lay a dark blue boubou on her bed, found a silver-white wide scarf to fashion into a hijab, set out a matching white slippers and bag set and walked off to the bathroom.
"Maama. I don't like the way my malam looks at my face. He stares at me too much." Halima heard Safeenah say as she walked out if her room, glossing her lips. She stopped and walked to Safeenah who was eating breakfast in her school uniform.
"Safeenah. What has been happening at Islamiyya?" She asked with a tremble in her voice. "Well. The malam keeps calling me out to tell me something after Islamiyya, I have to force them Umaima to wait for me. I want maama to go warn him to stop making me stay behind." Halima chewed her bottom lip.
"Leave it to me. I'll call on him before I go to work this morning. If he ever lays his hand on you because I said anything. Tell me! Okay?" Safeenah nodded and bent to drink more milk from the tumbler.
"Mummy. I'm leaving." She informed her mother standing at the door of the kutchen. She met her mother packing Safeenah's lunch box and immediately, Halima was reminded of how much love her mother showed them from childhood, how she was readily available for everything. It also seems as though she didn't hear Safeenah's complaint, if not, she'd have beaten up the malam before warning him.
"Toh. Allah Hafiz. Jamal said you both are taking pictures today." Halima nodded suspiciously atbher mother. "Well, all i have to warn you to do is Smile. It's Sunnah, it won't kill you." When Halima shook her head, her mother waved her off. Halima shook her head again as she stepped out of the main gate.
She turned the other way and brisk walked to the masjid that housed an Islamiyya behind it. She walked to the Islamiyya, greeted the older students who didn't go to Western school and asked for the malam.
"Ah. Hajiya Halima. Ina Kwana." Halima didn't bother replying him in Hausa. "Assalamualaikum. Good morning." She began.
"Walaikum Salam. Is everything okay." He seemed to know like all predators do, that he had been caught.
"My sister Safeenah Aliyu." She began. He cut in and asked. "The Almajira?" It was as if someone stirred the hot pot of volcano in Halima's heart so she stopped, stared at the smug look on his face and decided to report him to her mother. Her mother would deal perfectly with him. He was already beyond redemption. So, she turned around and walked away without saying another word.
"Mummy." She met her mother at the gate, she had just escorted Safeenah to the school bus that was reversing at their gate.
"Ah Halima. You're back?" Halima shook her head and followed her mother inside the house. She dropped her bag angrily on the chair and began to explain what had happened. That man was a predator, surely he would be preying on other girls asides Safeenah.
