The first few days were simply uneventful travel, with only one close call where Runaan thought he heard someone in a tree near the group's camp. Y/N waited in a different one now, carefully measuring each breath and movement to be silent.

She was covered in leaves, muddy, and felt absolutely nasty, wishing she didn't have to hide in bushes and hollows to sleep, or brought more to eat than a little pack of dried food. Food.

She was ripped from her wistful thoughts when there was yelling below, and although Y/N couldn't make out words, it was heated enough for her to look over at the group curiously.

It was Rayla and Runaan of all elves, and Rayla looked on the verge of stomping off, which would never end well considering how close they had dared to camp to the castle itself.

She ended up doing exactly that, however, disappearing into the trees to Y/N's right. Runaan sat back down with a huff, waving off everyone who offered to go after her.

Y/N stood slowly, cursing the small size of the trees in the human kingdoms. Xadia's trees were enormous and leafy, even the puny ones, in comparison to these.

She moved across the branch, then jumped to the next tree, keeping Rayla in sight. Her friend ran to a clearing, where she angrily sat down on a rock, pulling out a knife and stabbing it into the soft earth with a huff.

Y/N debated going down and revealing herself, so Rayla knew she had her back. She rolled her shoulders and shook her wings slightly.

Stupid. She thought. She doesn't need help. Why am I even here? Running off like this can have serious consequences. Sure, her absence in the village wouldn't be noted due to the fact she had told everyone she would be visiting a sunfire elf friend, but if she didn't keep the secret over here none of it would matter.

They'll make you a ghost for this one. Y/N thought to herself, then jumped as the bushes to her right shuddered and a human guard walked out, probably investigating the noises Rayla had been making. Before Y/N could react, he spotted Rayla, and gasped, turning to run.

Rayla immediately jumped up, flicking both of her knives open and giving chase. There was no time for stealth. Y/N's wings flew open and she bolted after them, not sure what she should do.

I don't have a weapon! Y/N felt like smacking herself. What a big help I am!  If she helped Rayla catch him, she was done for, but if she didn't... maybe kill him if he escapes? That would risk human detection, and Rayla would tell Runaan he got away, which would make him change his strategy to something less advantageous whether the humans knew or not.

Y/N had hesitated too long. Before she knew it, Rayla had him pinned, then almost as fast, she let him go. And then he was gone, surprisingly silent.

Rayla stood there for another second, knives still open. After a few more moments, she folded them, and stared at the ground.

What am I doing?  Y/N shook herself, and bolted after the guard in the direction he had disappeared in. After leaping from tree to tree, with no luck, she softly landed in the ground, listening as she silently ran towards Katolis.

Soon, she heard his heavy breathing and footsteps. His breaths were short and constricted, from panic or fatigue, Y/N didn't know, but she was right behind him.

So how are you gonna kill him without a weapon? You don't know how strong he is. Y/N thought, annoyed with herself, and getting sick of her lack of being able to plan ahead.
