Y/N waited at the top of the small hill in front of the Storm Spire as the black mass came from the forest. She gripped her scythe tightly, tapping each pouch that hung from her belt, mulling each one's contents over in her head repeatedly.
Y/N could've cut the tension in the air awhile ago, but now it seemed to thick even for that. She felt like she was drowning in it. It was stifling and nervous, and only got worse as the no longer human army approached.
She reached over and grabbed Rayla's hand, squeezing it tightly. She squeezed back, not looking away from the advancing army as Y/N glanced over at her. Being on the front lines was scary, yes, but both were more worried about what they were protecting behind them, the spiral steps to the spire.
Callum had stayed back on the path to defend the tight staircase up the spire, giving Rayla so many more reasons to not let anything past the blockade. And Y/N...
She picked up her Sunfire shield, kneeling in her place shoulder to shoulder with elven soldiers. A small amount of heat radiated off their skin, just enough to feel uncomfortable, but not burn.
The human fighters and Janai hung back a little to pick off those who breached the barricade. Y/N watched the monster army draw closer, and couldn't help a long look over her shoulder.
Søren stood by General Amaya, hand on his sword hilt, staring at the mass coming towards them. He slowly unsheathed it, his unblinking gaze locked on the two horses that led the army. Claudia and... Lord Virus.
Could he handle facing his family like this? Y/N turned back towards the line of elves, adjusting her shield to figure to perfectly against the others. He'll be fine. Focus on your task, not his.
Still, the worries and anxiety hung at the back of her mind as Janai gave the signal, and the warriors collectively raised the shields, a orange and yellow energy appearing between them.
All sound seemed to cease as Y/N focused on the monster army that began charging towards them. Her breathing and heart rate were still very audible, however, and she waited for Janai's second signal as the monsters grew dangerously close.
"And drop!" Janai screamed. The barricade complied, slamming their shields to the ground and creating a shockwave that knocked back the closest attackers. Y/N barely had time to catch her breath before more slammed against their wall, elves grunting as they tried to hold them back.
"Hold!" She grunted, helping the elf next to her keep his balance as the fiery monsters pushed against their wall. The sound of metal scraping against rock was deafening, and a few seconds later shouts and panicked orders signaled a breach.
"Close." She ordered, slowly pulling her shield out as the elf warriors closed in to fill the hole. As soon as she was free, she threw the shield across her back, latching it onto her armor before hurling herself at the spew of monsters running through the breach.
Y/N swung her scythe around, taking out five before taking out her shield again, pushing back and trying to help block and reseal the hole in their defenses.
"Y/N!" Søren was there beside her, pushing back and struggling to hold the rock creatures from swiping at his legs as he met the sword of another. Together, they managed to push them back, giving the elves a chance to fill the hole and lock their shields once again.
"The barricade won't hold much longer." Y/N yelled to Janai, trying to catch her breath. The elf nodded, giving the small hand signal, and Y/N was up in the air, swooping over the front lines and towards the center, where there were still many monsters running towards the wall.
