Recap from the last chapter.....

"Plague victim," I whispered.

"They found another one," Tess sighs. She squints to try to get a better look.

"Yeah," I sigh.

(Demi's POV)

With the atmosphere very tense from the scene we just witnessed, although it's nothing new, Tess has the idea to change the subject. Thank you Tessy...

"What'd you bring them?" Tess asks Day, referring to the gift wrapped in a cloth near Day's foot.

Day starts to smile while he picks up the gift, untying the cloth to reveal many things inside.

"Some of the stuff we saved this week. It'll make for a nice celebration once they pass the inspection," Day answers, smiling. He then holds up a pair of goggles and says that they're for his older brother John, saying that it's sort of like an early birthday gift.

"That's really sweet of you Day. He's really gonna like it," I say, a sweet smile coming across my face.

"Thanks, I really hope he likes it. It's not something grand though," Day says, putting the goggles down so he can carry on looking through the stuff he's gathered.

"No, really, he'll love it," I say, nodding my head. Day looks up and sends me a smile as a 'thank you.' I nod back, and look out the window once again. Five houses remain.

As we sit/stood in silence, I look over noticing Day's face is screaming with worry, and the fact that his hand is on his forehead which means he might be having one of his intense headaches. I can relate, not something to mess around with.

"One of your headaches coming on?" Tess asks worriedly. Looks like I'm not the only one who noticed.

"No. I'm okay," Day denies, looking back out the window to his mother's house. Shaking my head, I start motioning to Tess that I want to play a game of rock, paper, scissors, and she agrees instantly.

"He looks thinner," Day mutters, voicing his thoughts for us to hear.

"Well he's alive, and walking, that's a win in my book," I say, focused on coming up with a strategy to beat Tess cause' she's a legit god at this game. We start playing a few rounds.

She won again. I lost... nothing new....

Day nods slightly, taking in my comment, and continues watching his mother's house like a hawk. He draws out a breath. He's really tense huh..

Minutes later, Day puts away his toy (the slingshot he's obsessed with) and asks to join us in our game of rock, paper, scissors. Tess instantly says yes, but me.. I'm just trying to find out how this little 13 year old keeps beating me.. I scrunch my face in irritation.

Constantly, Day keeps on glancing at the house during our game, and it's starting to get on my nerves, like you need to calm down. Plus, he's casually sitting on the ledge on the window. Like, are you afraid you're gonna' fall or something? It's happend before..

"Day chill out, and get off the ledge, you're going to fall," I sigh, letting my nerves get to me.

"I'm totally chill, what are you talking about," Day says, still rapidly looking at out hands and then the window in a continuous circle.
