Tabby drums her fingers against her kitchen table, watching the clock tick above the doorway to the hallway leading to the front door. Her legs are crossed under the table and she's counting down the seconds when her friends should be arriving to hear her big news. Rhyannon's wedding was days ago which means she and Carlos have been engaged for several days now. She hasn't found the right time to tell just about anyone yet. She's been working a lot with the kids at the preschool and busying herself with schoolwork so that she can put off her announcement for another time. Telling Pops, Dalton, and her friends is a little bit nerve wracking. She doesn't want any of them looking at her differently just because she thinks this is a good idea and she believes this is what needs to be done. The clock strikes noon just as the front door swooshes open and Tabby can see straight down the hallway, her friends coming inside.
"Hey, what was your emergency text about?" Anna leads the way, her hair straightened down her back.
"Is everything okay?" Case wonders as he, Harrow, Israel, and Anna all find seats at the table where Tabby sits at the head.
"I need to tell you guys something." Tabby twists the gold ring around her finger so they can't see it yet. She and Carlos went and picked some cheap rings out just for now but she doesn't need a big, diamond ring to prove she's getting married. She's not THAT tacky.
"This sounds pretty serious." Harrow looks worried, glancing at her boyfriend next to her.
Tabby takes a breath, hoping for the best as she holds up her left hand to show off the ring. "Carlos and I are getting married!" No one says a word. Anna and Israel exchange strange looks while Case continues to stare at Tabby. Harrow smooths out one of her eyebrows, sighing and sitting back in her chair. "Did you hear me?"
"Oh we heard." Israel nods his head. "Loud and clear."
"This is the part where you guys cheer or something for me." Tabby lets out a nervous laugh. She buries her hands in her lap so no one can see just how cheap the ring is. It's not even real gold.
"How did he propose?" Anna tries brightening the mood.
"Actually, I did." Tabby straightens up, hoping they're slowly moving in to be happy for her. No one says anything again. "And then he did right after. It was pretty romantic."
"When did this happen?" Case wonders aloud.
"The other day after Rhyannon's wedding." Tabby answers honestly.
"And why do you feel the need to get married so soon?" Harrow asks for them all. "I mean, you have so much time."
"Oh my God." Israel gasps. "You're pregnant, aren't you?"
"No!" Tabby shakes her head, leaning forward over the table to explain the story. "He's... getting deported if he's not married to an American citizen."
"Tabby, don't do this." Anna looks at her seriously. "Don't marry someone just to keep them in the country."
"What happens if you end up hating each other after a week of being married?" Case adds.
"You guys can still visit each other." Harrow chimes in. "Mexico isn't even that far away."
"Yeah, I will drive you there if you want me to." Israel nods his head, all of them looking at Tabby with serious expression.
"You guys, it's not like he's forcing me to get married or anything." Tabby doesn't expect them to understand why she's doing what she's doing. Every form of love is different and Tabby knows that she and Carlos are going to last. She knows that she's young and everything but she feels like this is right. "I want to do this. I don't remember any of you talking to Rhyannon about this."
"He knew Kent for years." Israel backs up his brother.
"It doesn't matter how long you've known the person." Tabby argues. "If you feel it's right, then it's right."
"We're just looking out for you." Anna says calmly.
"Maybe it was a mistake telling you guys." Tabby tenses up. She's really not good at confrontation or any type of disagreement for that matter. She'd rather just work things out on a calm level but it seems like she's only going to get more mad the more she talks about this with them. She gets up from the table. "If you'd excuse me, I have a wedding to plan."Yahtzee slides on a denim vest over his red plaid shirt before leaving his bedroom that same afternoon. He stayed up until four in the morning simply talking to Phoebe on the roof outside his window. Yahtzee even found himself opening up to her about how he attacked his mother after she was beating his father. He doesn't regret doing any of it but Phoebe kind of made him feel down about not living with his parents anymore and how they don't even try reaching out to him. He tries not thinking about what she said too seriously though. If he does think about it a lot, he'll probably find something he doesn't like about her and then they'll stop hanging out so much- and that's something he doesn't want to happen.
"Aloy, we need to talk." Mason comes up the staircase just as Yahtzee leaves his bedroom.
"Okay..." Yahtzee slows in his tracks, wondering if he should take out a cigarette now or wait until after Mason says what he has to say.
"It's about Phoebe." Mason rubs his rough hands together. "I've noticed you two have been hanging out a lot lately."
"Yeah, she's pretty cool." Yahtzee says after a minute. Is he getting in trouble or something?
"Well, some of our house policies are that we don't recommend housemates to see each other in any romantic way." Mason continues, looking a bit nervous to tell him this.
"I can't help the way I look at someone." Yahtzee shrugs, not seeing this as a big deal- even if Mason is trying to make it one. "If I like someone, I like them. I can't really control that."
"But you can control your actions." Mason points out. "So, I'm just asking you not to act on them."
Yahtzee blinks, trying his best not to get too annoyed at this. He doesn't do too well with people telling him what to do, especially about his relationships with girls. What does Mason care if Yahtzee and Phoebe have a small romance or whatever this is? Just because they live in the same house doesn't make them related in any sort of way. "You're telling me I can't date Phoebe?"
"Yes, correct." Mason nods his head and then holds his hands up in defense. "I don't make the rules. That's what the system calls for. You both are in this house to focus on bettering yourselves for the real world and whatnot. You guys aren't here to fool around after supper."
"Noted." Yahtzee fishes through the pocket of his jeans for his herbal cigarettes, rolling his eyes as he goes down the wide stairs. Screw that. If he wants to see Phoebe in a romantic way, that's what he's going to do and he doesn't need Mason trying to interfere with that. Yahtzee lights his cigarette, marching out of the house and hoping Phoebe is already outside on the porch.
