Yahtzee pulls a long sleeved blue thermal shirt over his head and pulls it down towards his waist. He runs a hand through his white dyed hair, watching the water droplets from is shower splatter across the mirror above the sink in Alice's bathroom. Hair products and makeup kits are neatly organized on the marble sink, the mirror spotless with the exception of lettered stickers spelling out 'Alice' at the top in gold. Yahtzee bends over to pick up his black jeans to slide his long legs through after pulling on his boxer briefs. With Phoebe basically throwing Yahtzee out of the group home, he's been staying with Alice- who welcomed him in without any hesitation. He would do the same for her in a heart beat but given his circumstances, he kind of feels like an intrusion. It's embarrassing that he was so reckless with Phoebe and managed to get his den parents to hate him enough to get him kicked out of the house for good. That community housing was his last chance at getting his behavior put in place and whatnot but now he's on his own.
"Smells good." Yahtzee walks into the Truso's extremely large kitchen. The marble floors are spotless, along with the counters, the stainless steel stove, the silver sinks, and the white cupboards. Mrs. Truso stands at kitchen island, slicing up strawberries to put them in a bowl, welcoming Yahtzee with a bright smile. Yahtzee has had numerous long conversations with Mrs. Truso since last year when it was him who gave her the wake up call to go to get help for her alcohol.
"I whipped up some french toast, bacon, and fruit so I hope you're hungry." Mrs. Truso gestures over to the round breakfast table where the food waits on white plates with wine glasses that are filled with orange juice... or maybe mimosas. Hopefully.
"Thank you, Mrs. Truso." Yahtzee fiddles with the back of one of the tall, island chairs. "It means a lot to give me a place to stay."
"You should be thanking ME." Alice struts into the kitchen, wearing a yellow camisole, skinny jeans, and yellow pumps. "I'm the one who said yes."
Yahtzee rolls his eyes at his best friend's smirk as they take their seats at the breakfast table. "I'm going house hunting soon so I shouldn't be in your hair long."
"House hunting?" Alice reaches for her drink. Yahtzee grins. If Alice ever reaches for her drink before her food, there's definitely alcohol involved. "Why so soon?"
"Well I don't plan on living here forever." Yahtzee picks up his fork to cut through his french toast.
"Are you eligible to own a house?" Mrs. Truso asks from the island. She looks so much better now that she's off the alcohol. Her skin looks lighter and her hair is less greasy. She's wearing a striped Ralph Lauren shirt with a pair of mom jeans but she looks better than she did before.
"Yeah, I already worked it out with the court." Yahtzee tries not to roll his eyes. For the past week or so, he's been signing all these papers and meeting with all these different people to get out of the community housing. Since he's eighteen, he's now allowed to do whatever he wants anyways so a house is his first step. "You should come with me, Alice. I'd like your opinion."
"If you're insisting." Alice flips her hair over her shoulder and then shoots Yahtzee a grin. "I'd be happy to go."
"Great." Yahtzee exhales, relieved to have people on his side. He knows that Alice is never not going to be there for him but it's still reassuring to see it.That same Sunday morning, JC peers out the front window of her house, keeping an eye on the driveway and the street to keep an eye out for Drew's jeep to come rolling by. They made plans to go to church together- now that JC is in God's good graces by confessing her sins the other night. She likes to think that God still likes her, even after all the bad things she has done. But the more JC thinks about it, the more she thinks about the worse people out there in the world who do more than she does. Hooking up with guys at the bars and catching an STD from it isn't the most horrible thing to happen so she really doesn't think that should count in the first place.
"You look eager." Xavier observes from the doorway into the den, where JC is standing at the window. "Waiting for someone?"
"Drew is picking me up." JC glances down at her light blue dress that stops above her knees. This was the only church appropriate she could find on such short notice. "We're going to church."
"You? Church?" Xavier chuckles, his arms folded across his chest. "Tell God I say hello."
"Can you keep your voice down?" JC glances over her shoulder to make sure her mother doesn't come down the stairs to question her on her outfit. She knows that Julia probably won't be the biggest fan of Drew since she isn't the biggest fan of any of JC's boyfriends. That's why, when Drew pulls into the driveway, she's running out the door before her mother catches her. "I'd rather not have my mom hear."
"Oh, relax." Xavier sits down on one of the chairs by the window. "Just because she didn't like Landon, doesn't mean she won't like Drew."
JC glances at her brother, wondering if he can read her thoughts or not. "She's not the only one that didn't like Landon. Neither did dad OR Pam. Or even Jamison for that matter." JC's father Laren is now living with his new wife Pam across the city where her half brother Jamison lives. She actually didn't know about even having a brother until the divorce between her parents was finalized and they had discovered the affair between Pam and Laren. Her family is kind of a mess.
"So who cares what they think?" Xavier picks at his fingernail. "Just as long as you're happy with someone, that's all that matters, right?"
"You'd think." JC mumbles to herself, glancing back out the window and then looking down at her brother to read his expression. "Why do you look so mopey?"
"I don't look mopey." Xavier tries smiling.
"Now you just look constipated." JC sits in the cushioned chair next to him. "What's up?"
"I'm just trying my best to get over Dakota." Xavier shrugs a shoulder. "I know it sounds stupid since we were never really anything but I liked him a lot."
"You do realize that you fall way too hard for guys that don't deserve it?" JC blinks. She's always felt bad for Xavier in the romance department. Either he finds himself falling in love after the second time he hangs out with someone, or he feels nothing at all. He just can't seem to win.
"Thank you, captain obvious." Xavier rolls his eyes just as the doorbell rings.
"I got it!" Julia Kane makes her way to the front door, shaking her hips as she walks. Julia had gotten her named changed after her divorce from Laren. She has shoulder length blonde hair that's usually always wavy and taken care of well. She attempts to dress younger than she actually is from time to time but manages to pull it off with her daughter's help.
"Wait, no!" JC glances out the window to recognize Drew's orange jeep parked in front of the garage. She gets up and scrambles towards the front door but it's too late.
"Hi, I'm here to pick up JC." Drew's voice says from the porch.
"Here I am, let's go." JC shoves her mother out of the doorway so she can get out onto the porch and pull her date away.
"Wait, who's the lucky fellow?" Ms. Kane follows the two of them out onto the front porch with an interested look in her face. She looks him up and down, looking back at JC for an answer.
JC growls. "This is Drew, my...?" Her eyes flicker over to Drew for help. What are they, exactly?
"Boyfriend." Drew answers for them both, shaking Ms. Kane's hand with a polite smile. JC blushes, liking the sound of that.
"Oh, well it's so nice to meet you." Ms. Kane says to him. "JC never told me that she was seeing someone."
"Oh?" Drew tilts his head at his girlfriend. "How come?"
"I guess I just never got around to it." JC grabs Drew's hand. "Sorry, mom. We have to get to church."
"Since when do you go to church?" Julia laughs, covering up her red lips with her hand.
"Since now." JC says back in annoyance. "And the longer you talk, the longer I keep the lord waiting."
JC pulls Drew off the porch, not allowing anyone else to speak another word. That wasn't exactly the way she planned for Drew to meet her mother, probably because she didn't plan for him to meet her at all.
