It had been just under a week since
Y/N had woken up in the bedroom wondering where she was. That bedroom had since become hers. She spent most of her time in the kitchen helping Tola with the cooking. Alfonse had come to visit once or twice, but Tola was always quick to chase him away again. The only person who she had not seen since her first day at the castle was the mysterious Archduke, whom Tola had told her to stay away from. Respecting the woman's words, Y/N had spent the last few days obediently inside the servant's quarters.
One day she had woken up, and walked down the hallway that led to the kitchen. It only had doors on the right-hand side, and Y/N was quite curious as to why. Walking into the kitchen, Y/N was overwhelmed by a variety of delicious smells. Inside the heavily perfumed room was Tola, who was busy tending to many different cooking pots. She was an amazing cook, but it was unusual for her to be cooking so many things that early in the morning.
"What are you making?" Y/N asked Tola curiously.
"The Archduke, requested that ay make a proper feast tonigh'," Tole said with a touch of irritation in her tone. "Even though there are no guests a-comin' he insists that we stay in practice."
"Oh, I see," Y/N chirped. "Can I help?"
"Not today littlen, ay'm too busy with this to by supervising ya as well," Tola grumbled, quickly adding some chopped vegetables into one of the simmering pots. "That's why ay asked Alfonse to show ye around the grounds today."
"Really?!" Y/N squealed as she hopped around the kitchen in excitement. "You mean I get to go outside today?"
Tola had kept Y/N indoors for the past few days, saying that the grounds of the castle were too dangerous for her to go exploring by herself.
"Yes yes, yar goin' outside today, but don't let it go to yar head," Tola said gruffly. Y/N was just about to run out of the kitchen, when Tola called after her, "Oi, ye can' go outside lookin' like that."
She pointed to Y/N's clothing, which was one of the simple white dresses that Tola had altered to fit her. None of the extra fabric in the sleeves or at the hem had been cut, but instead, it had been tucked up, which gave the skirt and the sleeves an excessive amount of poof. But, Y/N knew what Tola was getting at, for even though it had been altered, it still resembled a nightgown.
"'ere, take this and run along," Tola ordered, throwing a lump of fabric at the girl.
Y/N caught it, and looked at curiously. It was a pail blue sleeveless overdress that greatly resembled a tunic. It was made from a heavy wooden fabric, but the arm and neck holes were large enough to keep the garment easy to move in. Looking closer Y/N saw that the blue fabric was embroidered with purple threads at the hem. Y/N held the dress in wonder, she hadn't had anything so nice since her mother had been alive.
Slipping it on over her head, Y/N found that it fit her perfectly. She did a little spin, then ran up to Tola and gave her a big hug from behind. "Thank you thank you thank you!" She exclaimed as she excitedly made her way to the door.
"Yar welcome littlen," Tola said kindly. "Now go 'eve fun, but stay outta trouble ya hear."
Y/N nodded her head vigorously before she raced out of the kitchen. Pulling the door open, Y/N found a flight of several stairs that led up from the doorway to some kind of cobblestone courtyard.
Walking over to the left side of the kitchen, which was set partially underground, she found a small fenced-in yard. She jumped up and down, trying to look over the fence to see what was in there but she was too short.
Suddenly, Y/N felt two large hands wrap around her waist. She was scared at first, but then she found herself being hoisted into the air. From her new vantage point, she could see that the small grassy yard held a few dozen chickens. She turned her head to see that it was Alfonse who had picked her up. He set her back down with a smile.
