Taking off his sweaty armor to reveal handsome streaks of golden hair, Gilan realized that his face was not complementing his hair. With red streaks running down his cheeks and his eyes almost completely closed, it was not the pretty sight people were accustomed to. Usually when he walked out of the battleschool doors, the couriers could not keep their eyes off him. And he liked it. But now, no one would put him in the shoes of the young, handsome, knight in training that they called Gilan. He thought he'd better do something.
Running across the bridge spanning the river and breathing heavily, he was glad they didn't have to do this often in battleschool. Sure he was doing it now, but that was his choice. Feeling his powerful legs pumping underneath him, Gilan was tempted to keep running to the inn. But then he slowed when he realized that his legs were itching. As he did so, the figure known as Halt the Ranger went cantering by at a ridiculous pace on his stocky, barrel-chested horse. Gilan wondered how he ever got anywhere with that plow horse.
Gilan was also wondering what he did day to day. So curiosity got the better of him and he creeped after Halt.
When Halt reached the clearing in the forest, Gilan was surprised to find that he could actually move without making much noise.As Halt dismounted, Abelard, the horse gave a low warning rumble. "I know, boy, it's ok." The words were barely breathed as he loosened the girth and the noise could have been dismissed as the wind. But Abelard instantly relaxed and then the reins dropped loosely on the ground.
Slowly moving from tree to tree,Gilan noted that Halt was moving towards the river. When Halt stooped to drink, Gilan slowly crept forward and...
