The faded paths of dirt and grass continued to wind and curve, seemingly endless. It had been quite a while, and your horses had went from the wide open fields to the base of a huge cliff rimmed with crumpled, unearthed stone barrier remnants. From there, you passed a destroyed cluster of ruins, the path lined with ripped emblem banners, that was complete with monsters of all kinds and sizes. Link had to fight off a few; the others were easy enough to escape by horse.
All the while, from the very moment the two of you began to travel together, you had never once been in control of your steed. All of your attention was focused right on the back of Link's head, staring intensely at him as you let your thoughts and suspicions take over completely. Your horse had since reacted accordingly, being smart enough to both follow the trails and Link's horse on its own.
Everything about Link left you curious. His character, his silence, his nature. Not only were you intrigued by what few yet important things you had picked up on, such as his courage and willingness to lend a hand, but you felt a wonder that left a linger of suspicion. The whole idea was strange entirely. You woke up from beneath the waters of a freaking lake, and a strange female voice reaches out to you immediately and gives you an order. Furthermore, the person you were instructed to find finds you instead and saves you only hours later. You knew nothing about either of these figures as well, nothing on Link and not even a name for the female voice.
There were just too many questions yet not a single answer. Who was this unknown girl that reached out to you, and why you? Was all of this some kind of prank? Perhaps she was both magical and delusional? What about this Link character? Is he even trustworthy? Could he possibly be some kind of fake or imposter? Was there something deeper, some dark secret, lying behind his kind and heroic persona? Why doesn't he speak? Above all else, you still had no clue where in the world you were! Did this vast world even have a name?
These thoughts viciously swirled around in your head repeatedly, and for a second, you felt like you were on the brink of passing out due to overwhelming yourself. You really lost your grip on reality, as well as your physical grip on your horse as it continued to trot. Failing to see all of the beautiful scenery around you, such as the glistening lakes and the magnificent cliffs resting a ways down the path, and failing to realize just how lost you were within the walls of your mind, you were nearly sent flying off of your horse when it came to a rather sudden halt. Looking at Link, you realized your horse had simply followed suit.
When Link dismounted his horse, he sent you a concerned gaze at your frazzled form. Ignoring it, you asked politely, "What are we doing? Why'd you stop?" When he pointed to something across the rushing ravine, you noticed a large tower that reached towards the skies accompanied by warm, orange glows scattered all throughout its build. "Woah...." You breathed out in awe.
Link approached your horse and held his hand out to you. When you sent him a questioning look, he motioned for you to join him by pointing at the tower once more, then turning to you with a few beckoning waves of his hand. His expression never changed, never turning warm and approachable. He only looked somewhat cold and serious. This only made your suspicions worsen as more toxic thoughts began to flood your brain.
Noticing your inner conflict by the peculiar burning in your eyes alone, Link retreated his hand and gave you a small nod. He turned slowly on his heel and pulled out his glowing slate object that was attached to his belt. When he used it to form crystallized pillars in the water, ones which he could climb up and jump to and from in order to avoid being carried away by the rushing water, you couldn't help but stare at him as if he were some sort of demon.
At the same time, however, you couldn't help the huge wave of guilt that washed over you. The look in his eyes when he pulled his hand back to his side, and the second change in his expression just before he turned away to head toward the tower.... His eyes flashed with something that almost resembled some kind of hurt. Was it possible you had been both overreacting and overthinking all of this? Were your suspicions truly not suspicions at all, but instead an underlying fear of your own? That realization definitely brought a guilty frown to your face.
