RECAP

AVA WOODS' POV

The clothes included a short, gray wolfskin half cape that belted across my chest and went over my left arm, a slightly big, thick wool tunic dyed blue with gray points, a thick belt of woven leather, deep gray pants, and even fur-lined boots that seemed to have had the heavy soles and such removed, making them light enough for my spine to handle. A blue scarf with an odd insignia on it that matched a tattered tapestry hanging off the porch kept my nose warm from the cooling weather. New fur-lined leather gloves that nearly reached my elbows and matched the boots' style completed the outfit. They were so warm, I had nearly cried again. I tossed my old clothes, so battered and beaten and stained, into a corner and just hugged myself with joy, caressing the fur. I had never felt so rich before. These clothes were amazing.

It made me want to thank my hidden savior all the more.

          Whoever he was.

HIS POV

Snorting, I entered the fortress. I would worry about that when the time came. For now, I would wait till nightfall, then go and target another village. I had to pick cities and towns at random. Destroying only the towns around the valley would cause suspicion. I was powerful, but if I had to face an army alone, I doubted I would emerge victoriously. I would thus break up the patterns or merely scare the humans away from ceratin towns, creating a confusing pattern that would baffle any mapmaker or possible hunter. The ghost towns and blackened ruins were usually enough to ward off any curious traveler smart enough to turn away when danger presented itself.

Entering into my quarters, I faced the doors and retreated into my own thoughts.

          Waiting for nightfall.

AVA WOODS' POV

"Step and step and turn and step..."

I was pacing across my room, as there was little else to do. The room was larger than my entire shack, thank Notch. It felt good to walk again...well, stumble.

Two ugly, ragged white circles now adorned my stomach and side. They would still give me the odd twinge of pain from time to time, but other than that, my stomach was in excellent condition, considering the fact I'd nearly bled out several times. I had been a bit confused at first, wondering how I'd healed so fast, then shrugged it off and blamed it on the fact that I'd been sleeping for much of the time.

I still hadn't seen hide or hair of my savior, and as the days passed, my theory that he was just really shy was dispelled.

He was hiding something, that much was certain.

The blackened town outside, the fact I never seemed to hear him, the way he'd climbed down that sheer cliff as he rescued me...it was all too bizarre to be pushed aside with excuses.

I stopped my pacing and settled on the bed, which creaked with my weight, setting the beautiful crutches aside.

Was he studying the dark arts? It would explain the horrid roaring from the cave, his amazing strength, and the fact that he didn't want me to see him. Dark magic would also explain the wrecked town...but not his kindness. From what little information there was in my head on such matters, I knew that not many sorcerers were kind people, obsessed as they were with their spells, their desire to learn of dark things...was this an exception?
