"I can't believe we are finally here? This day couldn't have came any faster." Stephanie whispers in my ear.
"I am so happy right now we have worked so hard and it's finally paying off." I look at her.
She turns to her cheerful family and wave at them while they scream her name in excitement. She turns back to me and her smile frowns a little, "I'm sorry you don't have anyone to share this moment with."
"It's fine, I have my friends so." I semi-smile pretending not to be hurt and couldn't help to feel unwanted and unloved.
"What about your foster family they couldn't come?"
"I was in a group home since I was child, I was never in one place so never bonded with anyone. Once I turned 18 I was on my own and I went straight to college." My father walked out on my mother when I was 5 years old and she's put me in foster care. She just didn't want me after he left. I been moved around so many times I never bonded with anyone. I had to leave at 18 so college was the next thing for me to escape my reality.
"I'm sorry girl. It must be hard not having anyone. I'm always here for you if you need me." She runs my arm.
"Thanks." We were instructed to stand as we are preparing to take the stage. We walk in line and waited as our names get called individually.
Hearing my name was so heart warming for me, I have accomplish something, something great. I am not a college graduate. I have my bachelors degree in Business management and in Communication. Two degrees. I have double up so I can get two degrees. It was hard as hell but I didn't have anything else going for me so I remained busy and acoppied for 4 years.
Stephanie's name was called then mine was. I proudly took my diploma and exit the stage accordingly. Stephanie hugs me as I came to the last step. "Yes we did it!!!"
"Yes we did. We are still getting a place together right?" I asked. We have talked about loving in an apartment since freshmen year.
"Of course I even found a place and we have a showing tomorrow."
"When were you going to tell me?" I asked as we sat back down.
"After the ceremony." Stephanie has gotten so close during these 4 years. She sat next to me in our first class and ever since she's been glued to my hip. We taken the same courses and have the same concentration hence us getting the same bachelors degrees in business and communication.
I have been living in the dorms and now that it's graduation I don't really have anywhere to go now. The ceremony is coming to an end. Everyone is leaving with their families. I stand outside trying to figure out where the hell am I going to stay for tonight. I feel arms wrapped around my shoulders, "I was looking for you. My mother wants you to join us for dinner."
"That's great. I'm embarrassed to ask but, I have been staying on campus and now that we are graduates I have nowhere to stay now-"
"Girl if you ask me if you can stay with me imma smack you." She laughs at me, "You already know you're apart of my family."
I am so relieved. "Michael is having a graduation party too. Drinks and boys!"
"You know how weird I am around guys Steph."
"It's time to come out this shell of yours okay. Have some fun Malita." We walk to the parking lot. Mrs. Jameson, her mother approaches us and tells Stephanie to close her eyes.
I am confused but then I realized what's going on. "We are so proud of you Stephanie. You have worked so hard in college. I know we have been hard on you but that's because we believed in you and know how great and amazing you are."
I stood there beside her getting uncomfortable. Suddenly a pink Rolls Royce pulls up with a red bow on it. Her father gets out. "Open your eyes. Congratulations!" Her mother shouts.
Stephanie screams in excitement and bust into tears as she takes the keys from her father. She runs to her new car analyzing it. For a second I forgot how spoiled she is and how rich her family is. This definitely reminded me of that. Forgot her parents paid for her college while I took out loans and financial aid. "Come Malita!" She calls to me.
I walk over jealous but happy for her, "This is nice. Tinted windows too."
"I know this is awesome. My brand new car. I been wanting a Rolls Royce you know that. This is great." She hops in the driver seat.
I want to be excited for her, I am I'm Just jealous too. I wish I had a family, let alone parents to buy me any car for a graduation gift. She rolls down the passenger window and tells me to get in. "Look at this shit girl! He had the seats be pink too! I have the best parents in the world."
"You do. This is amazing." I look around.
Mrs. Jameson tells us to meet them at The Capital Grille. Stephanie hooks up her Bluetooth to her phone and calls every single person she knows to tell them about her new car. I don't blame her I would too if I have gotten a brand new car. We arrive. I was a little uncomfortable y this dinner because this isn't my family, they were talking about how proud they were if Stephanie and it made me extremely jealous. I want someone to say these things to me. Dinner was finally over we went to her house showered then head to Michaela's Party. It was cool and all. I kept to myself which is the opposite of what you do at a party. After a few hours of Ateohanie drinking and dancing we head back to her home. We crashed on her bed.
