Chapter 26

Maddelyn's POV:

Soon the D-day came. My graduation ceremony was over real quickly, with Ma and Kygo being the happiest. Lorenzo was busy taking pictures the whole time, there was a change in his attitude from those doses of medicine and I wondered how anticonvulsants can change a person this well.

To my greatest surprise, he was grinning from ear to ear. It was just me and my closest ones, Emily and Zaan. They walked up to Ma and Lorenzo and greeted them. Zaan pulled me into a warm hug and we congratulated each other. Emily, however didnt look really great. With a good score, she should be a happy little girl by now.

I walked up to her as she was playing with the hem of her shirt beneath the coat. "What's w-" before I could finish she hugged me. It was not her usual teddy bear therapy hug, it was something else. I sensed pain in it. She started sobbing.

"Dad couldn't come. He is dead. He said he flew to states on a task but now I cant see him forever. No funeral either." Her voice was low and squeaky with so much pain that my chest clenched.

" I'm so sorry!" I said, consoling her that everything is going to be just alright. Kygo dropped her home after a while and came back, his mood ruined and he was playing with his watch.

"Lina, let's go home." Lorenzo said. I was pretty sure something was going on between Kygo and Emily and it was so long I and Kygo actually spent time together. He looked bad too. I wanted to talk to him so badly.

"You leave if you want to. I want to hangout with Kygo. We will get Cheryl on our way back." I blurted. He looked at Kygo and nodded. Ma hugged me and kissed my cheek, telling me I made them proud and they love me. I told her  I love her more than she could think and waved them a goodbye as they left.

"Didnt tell me you were dating?" Kygo furrowed his brows. I jumped and hugged him, which he returned longingly.

"I've got a lot to tell you! Let's pick up Cheryl on our way back. Okay?" I said and he nodded. 

He looked surprisingly disturbed, as if something was bothering him from long. We got into the car and the first thing he said was how badly he had missed me when he was away at work.

"Who's the guy you went out with?"he asked. "My careless brother didnt even ask you for his name or got his background checked. Now that I ask him he tells me he didnt push you for details."he scoffed.

"Nice guy, Kygo. You'll like him. Forget that. What's with Emily? How did her father die? Now I get this feeling I shouldn't have let her go home. I'm sure you know. Tell me" I said.

Kygo let out a long exasperated sigh.
"Long story. Bernardo killed Lamberto." He said and my jaw dropped.

"What the fucking hell?" I screamed. "Why!?"

"See. Theres this man. William. He is boss' rival. Their rivalry started with Greg. Greg and William's father were into this war, that Greg, having an upper hand finished William's whole clan except him, who survived with major injuries. All this happened with a heavy loss on Manciniis side too." He lowered his voice, his eyes vigilant.

"My dad, Lorenzo's best friend, died there. I couldn't even see him one last time. He left me and Hugo with Lorenzo." He said, his hand clenching the steering, his knuckles growing pale.

"Mmhm." I said softly, my eyes on the road. We led to our favourite place, our lake side garden. Turning off the engine , he pushed himself back, his head on the headrest as he continued after a long sigh.

"William grew. He grew to an extent where it was very difficult for anyone to reach. He destroyed clans, formed greater armies. Lorenzo was another self made mafia man, who just started growing. He joined Greg initially but after William killed your grandma and sources say he killed your aunt's family too. Greg lost his money, barns, wife and daughter."

"Aunt?" I asked, my eyes widening at the sudden twist in the family history.

"Laura." He said.

"Since then, Lorenzo started growing. I was by his side the whole time. William has two children, a boy and a girl. His wife died too, recently. Lorenzo secretly appointed seven men to kill his son but all those incapable bastards died too."

"Damn" I mumbled.

"His daughter. Ruben took her and brought her to me, asking me if we could throw her into one of our barns. He asked me for something else. Killing her. When I saw her, it was..."

"It was?" I asked, my eyes narrowing into his.

"Emily." He sighed and I was shocked. Why didnt she tell me anything about this before?

"William asked Lamberto to take care of her since she was two. We tracked handsome amounts being transferred. By the time I could get there, Bernardo had already reduced him to ashes."

"Holy fuck!" I whispered, my palm covering my mouth.

"That's the thing. Lorenzo killed William yesterday. Hanged him upside down from the chandelier of his own mansion."

"..and before anything could happen to Zair- um..Emily, I took her away and told Lorenzo I want her."

Want her?

"Seriously? Why?" I frowned.
"We like each other Lina. She told me about her real family after I returned, when William died. Now I have no idea how to explain everything to her."

I let out a sigh.

"Let's get Cheryl." I said, changing the topic. We got her from Pietro's place. She was still fresh, always cute. Yelling the whole way " I wanth ith-keam I wanth ith-keam" she troubled us, so Kygo decided to stop at a parlour and she got two scoops of her strawberry. We bought the same, but chose to eat it later, putting it away.

She was excited the whole way, but some strange feeling swarmed my chest. Like something bad was certain to happen. Her laugh, her dimples and those blue orbs held only happiness, yet everything felt wrong. It was just laughter and happiness,
