A weak knock at the door made all of our heads turn. Christine stood but I gestured for her to sit and went to open it. I opened it to a very depressed looking Squelch. Meg.
"Is it?"
He nods.
"She washed up on shore at the pier..."
He whispered. I turned to Christine and Gustave who were happily eating their breakfast.
"God, what do I say to her? W-was it suicide?"
He nodded. I turned back to Christine, trying to hide my sadness. Poor Meg. I could've helped her. All she needed to do was see us. See Christine alive and well.
"Have you told Madame yet?"
He nods weakly.
"She-she's in hysterics...
Squelch. Stay with Gustave? Please?"
He nods and enters our home.
"Christine. We have to go see Madame.
Why?
I'll tell you on the way. Get dressed."
She runs off to our room and quickly puts on a simple maroon dress. She looks perfect. Her hair falls in springy curls that frame her face. I grab my coat and hat.
"Gustave, you behave alright? We'll be back.
Alright Papa!"
I kiss his head, Christine embraces him and we're out the door.
