My arms felt weak, I couldn't move my legs.

Was this how you felt when you die?

Lucy was screaming for her daughter Nashi to run away, but Nashi continued to fight in order to protect her mother. Natsu was on the other side of the safe house along with Erza, Gray and most of our best fighters.

Where were we? We were backed into a corner, forced to fire aimlessly at the horde which sauntered towards us. It wasn't only Lucy's daughter, there was Red my adopted son.

It had been eight years since we had moved from the palace after it become corrupt. We were all making our way towards the East when I spotted him.

His black hair had grown long and he resembled someone who I used to know. A knock on the head deprived me of my memories and caused me daily pains in my head. Red was skin and bones, we almost mistook him for one of them, but then he began to cry saying that he couldn't find his mother.

I was 25 at the time and I couldn't just let him wander around like that. So I took him with me as my own son, he said that his parents died saving him from a group of zombies.

I didn't want him dying to save his adoptive mother from them, but that was too hard to do.

"Red, take Nashi and Lucy. Climb through the ventilation system and get to the others. Tell them that-,"

"No way Ma!" Red yelled, his voice was really low for a 15 year old, rough too. "I'll get you, Nashi and Aunt Lucy outta here! I ain't leavin' anyone behind!"

"Who do you remind me of...?" I wondered aloud.

"Levy!" Lucy called out, "if we don't get through this there's something you should know... about before you lost your memories."

My eyes widened and I nodded, eager to hear what she had to say.

"You lost your memories because... Because..."

"Just tell me Lucy!"

"Because you wanted to! You lost someone who you loved so much, you lost many people... But he was your greatest loss, and you wanted to forget."

She shot a zombie in the head and turned back to face me.

"His name was Gajeel. He looks so much like Red, it's unbelievable."

"Ga-Gajeel?"

"Yes! You first hated him, you were so cold to him. But somehow, you opened up to him... And that caused you so much pain. You didn't want to live with it, so you asked Wendy to help you get amnesia."

"That's stupid! I could've died!"

"Well, Wendy didn't help you, so you ... Y'know..." She made the action of smashing her head against a wall. "You did it yourself, and you succeeded."

"No way..."

"Ma!" I turned to see Red holding out his hand to me. "Nashi's getting Aunt Lucy, we've opened the vent! C'mon we need to get goin'!"

My arms stayed by my sides and I realised that I couldn't move at all. Red must've known this too because he cursed and fell to his knees. Luckily the zombies were further back now, so Red had the blessing of a few last moments with me and I had the blessing of a few last moments with him.

He looked up at me, his almost red eyes filling with tears.

"Don't leave me Ma. Please."

"I'm sorry Red, I'll meet your real mother and father and tell them how brave you are and how you've saved so many peoples lives."

"Ma..."

"I'll ask two things."

"..?"

"Take good care of everyone, especially Lucy. Give her that book I've been hiding from her, tell her happy birthday."

Red snorted. "It was her birthday three weeks ago."

"I'm not good at remembering these things okay?"

"Alright, fine. And the second one?"

"... Lend me your grenade Jellal gave you?"

"W-what? But why-?" He stopped and looked at me with pity in his eyes. "Oh, that's why."

I nodded.

Slowly, he took the grenade out from his belt and gave it to me. He took both of my hands and squeezed them before letting go.

"I love you Ma."

"I love you too sweetie."

I watched as Red wiped away tears then ran after Nashi and Lucy, then once he was in the vent they attempted to put the grid back on so that none of the zombies would follow them.

The pin was easy to pull out of the grenade.

"HEY! YOU UGLY GUYS! COME HERE, I HAVE A PRESENT FOR YOU!" I screamed, attracting the attention of all of the zombies in the room.

I pulled the pin.

It was one heck of an explosion.

--------------------------------

When I opened my eyes, I was in a white room. Light pink flower petals fell from above, but there was nothing up there but blank space.

"You came here too early." A gruff voice said.

I spin around, my eyes trying desperately to find the person who spoke to me.

"A-are you Gajeel?!"

"You remember my name at least, I'm glad Shrimp."

A tall figure suddenly appeared ten r so metres in front of me. As I got closer, I recognised it was a man with long black hair, crimson red eyes and metal piercings.

"Hi there."

"H-Hi." I said.

He held out his arm to me, his hand wide open.

"Shall we go?"

I sped towards him and grabbed his hand.

"We shall."
