Basic stuff:
Vladimir Lenin was the first ruler of Soviet Russia. He is often considered the dominant figure of the Russian revolution.
He was born in 1870 and died in 1924.

Vladimir Lenin's corpse is kept in "Lenin's mausoleum". He is presented and preserved so well that some would assume he was just a wax figure... But nope, it's the very-real preserved body of the man himself. (Image at the top of the chapter is a photo of his corpse, so you can see what I mean when I say it is well preserved.)

So, you're probably wondering how something like this is preserved so well. So I shall explain.
All the internal organs have been removed, leaving only the skeleton and muscles. The body is re-embalmed regularly, and is monitored/watched over by a team of specialists. This has been happening since the day Lenin died..Just about, anyway.

Now that all of that is explained, I'll give a bit more backstory to why Vladimir's corpse is being kept.

January the 21st 1924 was supposed to be the day that Vladimir's corpse would be burried. At first, he was only temporarily embalmed to prevent decomposition so his funeral could be held. The plan was that after a four day funeral,  he would be buried. However, four days didn't seem to be long enough for the viewing / funeral to be held. Thanks to the cold temperatures, the corpse remained almost perfectly preserved for this time.

After a whole 56 days, it was decided that Vladimir Lenin's corpse would not be buried, but instead be permanently preserved.
The original plan was to deep-freeze the body, but it was argued that this would not be a possible long term solution. Instead, it was suggested that a mix of chemicals could be injected into the body to prevent it from changing shape, becoming discoloured or decomposing at all. This had apparently been done on some corpses before, so this was the method of preservation that was decided on.

As of now, the same method is still being used to preserve Lenin's body. Every 18 months, the body is taken to be re-embalmed. The body is washed in embalming fluid and injected with the necessary chemicals.
