What is a bog body / bog mummy?
"A bog body is a human cadaver that has been naturally mummified in a peat bog."
The corpses are often preserved so well that the skin and internal organs still remain. Strangely, the bones are usually not in such good condition, due to the dissolution of the calcium phosphate of bone by the peat's acidity ( I hope that makes sense lmao).
Such mummies have mostly been found in Northern European countries of Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Ireland. How are bog bodies preserved so well?
To begin with, I'll just say that the bodies are not preserved in the same way as your average mummy would be. It's actually a really strange process. Some bogs have pH levels similar to vinegar (due to decomposing matter), and in this case the corpse is pretty much pickled.
(I'm tempted to call bog bodies "forbidden pickles" from now on lmao)
It is rare that a bog has conditions like this though, but that's part of what makes this natural process of preservation so goddamn cool.((I couldn't find too much more info on the process, mostly because it's a bit of a dificult topic to put into comprehensible words... And because my research skills suck. Aha.))
Some of the most well known or notable bog mummies:
• Bocksten Man, found in Sweden in 1936.
• Tollund man, found in Denmark in 1915.
• Windeby I, found in Germany in 1952.
• Lindow man, found in England in 1984.
If you would like me to extend this list or do a chapter on one mummy in particular, just comment 'n' say so.
