"I don't know if I want to go out there."
"That's what he wants, you see. He wants you to stay inside, and afraid. He wants you to go insane."
"How do you know?"
"Just trust me on this one."
"Wait. How did you know what he wants? Do you seriously read minds or something? Or are you an Australian fugitive slash ex-murderer?"
"Just get out the door."
"I'm too scared."
"Ready to go?"
Ivy had been silent through our bickering, but interrupted with a slightly impatient-but-trying-to-be-polite tone.
I looked back at Carter, my eyes narrowed and dread kicking in my stomach, then back at Ivy.
"If anyone asks, I'm going against my own will," I mumbled, throwing my bag over my shoulder.
She smiled, lighting up the room like she usually did. "Is that a yes? Great. Let's go."
That wobbly knees thing started to happen. My feet bolted into the floor. But when Carter tugged on my arm, I reluctantly unfroze and shrugged away from him.
"Aw, don't be like that!" He whined with a cocky grin, putting another hand on my shoulder. I shook it off again.
"It's called the cold shoulder, it means I'm not talking to you." I said, somewhat stubborn. My lip was pushed out into a pout.
But really, I was just hiding the fact that I was scared.
Very scared.
"Come on!" He pouted.
I didn't look at him, but to Ivy instead, who was still smiling. "Do you hear something Ivy? Like someone talking? I think it might've been the wind."
"There isn't any wind!" Carter exclaimed.
"Yep, definitely the wind."
"Oh, so you're ignoring me now? Very mature."
"Out we go!" Ivy interrupted us again, shaking her head. She put her hand on our backs and shoved us towards the door, almost too far. I stopped myself before my nose could collide with it. Carter and I looked at each other simultaneously, sharing a look that I couldn't describe. His expression was wild and daring. And mine? I knew that anyone could see the pure fear inside me.
What if Red was right there? I couldn't help but think. Didn't they say they would catch him? What if he turns up at school? What if he was watching me all night? What if I'll never be able to go to school again? What if I have to move away and change names? What if I had to act like Lillian Rose Anderbeld never existed?
