chapter 10

"So, how did it go?" Rio asked with a mischievous expression plastered across her face. I buried my face in my hands. I felt terrible.

"I was too cowardly to tell him. And I ruined everything." I said, "I feel like I'm rushing this. I want this friendship to last forever, but at the same time, I want it to be something more..." I trailed off.

"Well, I'll help you, " Rio said, slinging her arm around me, before whispering into my ear her plan.

"What are you two talking about?" Isogai asked.

"Her failed love life, " Rio said, sticking her tongue out.

"Ah well, I want to be included."

"Guys!" My face heating up. I definitely did not want to talk about this.

"Don't worry, let us do all the planning, " Rio said with a devilish glint in her eyes.

  I sighed. Rio positioned me in the middle of the forest, saying that she would go get Karma. I doubted her plan a little too much. She said that she was going to push me off the cliff into the water, and Karma would come to save me. The thing was, I couldn't swim. However, she just shrugged it off and insisted that he would save me.

  I was shaking. This did not sound like a very good plan. The chance of me dying was 100%. I tried to run, but Rio just put me back in place. She was going to go call Karma, saying that I was in danger, while I hung off the side off a twig.

  I quickly got into position. At least Isogai did not agree with her, standing at the bottom in case I did fall and would rescue me. Somehow. Oh God, I really was going to die, wasn't I?

  I heard ruffling among the leaves. He was here. I felt frightened for a second, clinging onto the branch, like there was no tomorrow. Actually, there probably wouldn't be for me.

"Help me!" I shouted, genuine fear in my voice.

Crack.

  Oh God no, I was getting out of here. I tried to grab onto the rocks, but the rocks were too sharp, slicing through my skin and causing my hand to bleed. I steadily positioned myself on the branch, about to jump up and grab onto the cliff. As I did, the branch below me fell. I tried to grab onto it, but I missed.

"Help!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.

  This was it. This was where I die. Oh lord please forgive the sins I have committed. I closed my eyes. That was until I realized that a hand wrapped around mine. I looked up to see the redheaded sadist that I had feelings for.

  He hoisted me up, helping me. All the while, I couldn't only stare into his eyes. All I could do was thank him. He wrapped his arms around me, and I started crying. I nearly died because of Rio's stupid plan.

"Don't ever put yourself in danger ever again, " he whispered into my ear.

"Okay, " I sniffled.

  I looked up into his mercury-gold orbs. They were mesmerizing. I could see a whole sea of emotions hidden behind them. Anger, at myself for doing that. Sadness, that he nearly lost me. Happiness, that I survived.

  And I could see one more emotion. At that moment, I was ready. I was certain. I didn't care if he broke my heart. All I knew, was the last emotion behind those eyes was affection. I didn't know whether it was as a friend or more, but I was ready.

"Karma, I-" my breath hitched.

"I like you!" I blurted out.

  His eyes widened. For a second, I thought he was about to reject me. Push me away. Say that he didn't like me like that. But then he chuckled.

"I like you too, Ichika, " he said, running his hands through my hair.

  At that moment, words couldn't even describe how happy I was. I leaned in, and our lips met. From rivals, we became friends. And suddenly, something more. I melted into the kiss, just like how my heart melted as it happened.

  Maybe we were taking this too fast, but I liked it that way. Besides, he was Karma Akabane. The boy I had a crush on. The redheaded sadist. The guy who I competed with. The boy who was my rival from day one.

  What captured me and lured me in, was The Devil's Smile.

"Do you think they forgot us?" Rio asked, watching them from behind the bushes.

"Definitely, " Isogai replied, still huffing from climbing up the mountain.

"I can't believe that worked. I thought she would die for sure, " Rio joked lightly while watching the scene.

The two classmates snickered from behind the thickets.
