"Okay, so I know that it's a Friday night and all, but exactly how late are we staying out?" David asks, taking a bite of his cotton candy.
"Honestly, that depends on you guys. If you guys stay, I think I will too, but otherwise I'll probably end up heading home," I tell them, stealing a piece of David's cotton candy.
David looks like he's about to protest, but James cuts him off. "I might head home after the main show. I'm not feeling too well."
"No dude, you should stay. At least until the vendors close down," David claps James on the back, leaving his arm to drape over James' shoulders.
"I dunno man," James mumbles, looking off into the distance.
"What's wrong dude? You always stay until sunrise," David asks, concern creeping into his voice.
"It's nothing, I'm just," James pauses and glances at me before continuing. "I'm just not feeling well."
I can tell that James and David need a minute, so I tell them that I'm gonna head to the restroom. After walking for a few minutes, I realize that I have absolutely no clue where they are.
I decide to just walk around for a bit, considering I don't even have to use the restroom, I just wanted to give them some time alone. I run into a cute little booth selling handmade jewelry. Weirdly, there isn't anyone occupying it.
"Um, hello?" I call, looking at a cute bracelet on display.
Suddenly, a girl no older than twelve years old pops out from behind the wall. "Hi!"
I step back, startled. "Hi there. How much for this bracelet?"
"That one is 4 bucks! But," she pauses, trying to add dramatic effect. "If you buy the matching necklace, you can get a flower crown for free."
"Oh, that sounds like a steal. How much is the necklace?" I ask, raising one of my eyebrows.
The little girl giggles and I smile. "It's 6 bucks!"
I smile at her enthusiasm and hand her a twenty. "I'll take it."
She has a look of accomplishment written all over her face as she grabs the necklace and bracelet, putting them in a cute little bag. She reaches over to her left and grabs a flower crown made with little pink roses.
"Here you go! Your change is ten dollars." She grabs a five dollar bill and five ones, holding them out for me.
I shake my head before speaking, "Keep it. I'm assuming your parents left you in charge because you're a responsible young lady. Spend it wisely." She smiles so big that I can't help but grin along with her. "Would you mind helping me put my things on?"
She reaches over the counter and clips the necklace together, doing the same to my bracelet before I lean down, allowing her to put the flower crown on top of my head.
"Thank you. Have a good night!" I wave, grinning at her.
"You too!" She waves goodbye to me as I walk to another booth.
An absentminded smile takes over my expression, probably making me look like an idiot. I can't help but smile at the little girl's innocence and joy. I hope she stays that way for as long as possible. While I'm lost in my thoughts, I bump straight into someone, dropping my bag.
"Ah, I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention," I mutter mindlessly. I pick up my bag, not bothering to look up before I try to pass by.
"Whoa, whoa. Baby girl, not so fast," the man I bumped into says, blocking my path with his arm.
