ADAM BANKS SAT IN mickeys that day after school as Charlie grumbled on about Ted Orion. Adam really had nothing to say about it so the boy just listened as he attempted to finish his biology homework.
"I mean, you have a choice, don't you?" Charlie said. The boy's headspace was visibly in another place as Adam glanced at Charlie and rose his eyebrows with a hum.
"To play for varsity," Charlie said, "are you even listening?"
Adam gave him an apologetic glance with a shrug. "Sorry," he said quietly, "I zoned.."
Charlie just shrugged it off and began to talk again. Adam allowed his thoughts to lead him away from the boy as he picked up his pencil and tried to complete the page in front of him.
Adam had never been the best at biology or science in general. He was really just trying to find something productive to bring his mind to because the in last couple months, it hadn't been doing a very good job of that.
He reread the same question for about the fifth time. He just couldn't focus. "How many-" Adam began to whisper to himself for help. He let out an exasperated sigh as he ran a hand through his hair. "How many-" November. Adam shook his head and tightly shut his eyes as he felt his mind trail off. "How many-"
"Telephone! Now!" He heard a voice exclaim, interrupting his thought cycle. The bell to mickeys door abruptly rang.
Charlie stopped in the midst of his sentence as him and Adam snapped their attention to the door where Connie, Guy, and Averman stood.
"I tried to tell her," Guy shrugged, "I really tried to make her wait till we got home!"
"Shut up, Guy," Connie snapped. The girl turned her attention to where Charlie was sitting with a confused look on his face. "What time is it?"
Adam glanced over to the clock for a second before looking back to Connie. "3:07- why?"
Casey Conway found herself intrigued in the girls rush as she furrowed her eyebrows and leaned on the counter. "What can I get you, Connie?"
The brunette had snapped her attention over to where Casey stood with a patient smile. "Nothing really Mrs Conway," Connie said nicely, "may I just use your phone?"
Casey pursed her lips together into a small smile before pointing to where a phone hung on the wall. Instantly, the girl had rushed over with Averman trailing behind her. Guy, on the other hand, made his way to Charlie and Adam.
"What's she on about?" Charlie asked as he glanced to where Connie Moreau was trying to quickly dial in a number.
Guy just looked at her and ran a hand through his hair with a sigh. "She's trying to get a hold of Nova before she goes to bed," The boy said before looking back to Charlie and Adam, "she had her first practice and day of school today..."
Charlie shrugged and looked to Adam with a questionable look- however, the blond did nothing but quickly look back at his paper with the best unfazed expression he could muster.
Charlie and Guy exchanged knowing glances before they heard Connie's excited voice pipe up.
"Did you get a hold of her?" Guy called out from the short distance between them
Connie smiled and nodded vigorously before Averman stole the phone and began talking into it.
"Come on," Charlie said, "let's go say hi"
The brunette stood up and began to walk away with Guy before they turned to Adam. "You coming?"
Adam, who acted as if he didn't care what had been going on, hummed in response as he glanced up at them in an oblivious manner.
"Nova," Guy said, "you going to come say hi?"
Adam just looked at them and shrugged before he saw Connie giving him a look in the distance.
"Just say hello" Connie sighed as she approached him and began to desperately tug his arm along.
Guy and Charlie had already gone off to the phone to talk to Nova but both knew that the primary reason they had left was because they didn't want to save Adam from Connie's persuasive rathe.
Adam tugged his arm away from Connie grasp and shook his head. "I can't," he said, "I have bio homework to do"
Connie glanced over to his half completed sheet of homework before rolling her eyes at him. "It takes like a good five minutes to just say hi and ask how her day is..." Connie pleaded, "will that really kill you?"
"It'll kill my grades" Adam shrugged
Connie gave him a blank stare but nonetheless the boy was slightly frightened. He'd be lying if he said it didn't take him some strength to withhold a whimper.
"Stop making excuses, Adam." Connie sighed
The blond bit the inside of his cheek before he slowly glanced at his homework. Connie impatiently tapped her foot on the ground as she crossed her arms over her chest. She could clearly see through Adam's facade. She knew that part of him did want to talk to her.
Adam Banks let out a sigh of defeat before looking back to meet Connie's impatient gaze.
"Just one hi, okay?" Adam said as he stood up, not regretting to give her a look as he passed her by
"As long as you talk to her" She said as she put her hands up in defence and followed after the boy
As they approached the phone, the boys looked at Adam and saw him give a hesitant look to Connie before she rolled her eyes and asked for the phone.
Adam couldn't withhold the shaky breath that came out as he quietly heard mumbles and snip-its of November's voice when Charlie passed the phone to Connie. He intently looked at Connie as she let out a laugh to something Nova had said before quieting the girl over the phone down.
"Okay okay," Connie said as her laughter died, "Adam is going to say hi"
Taking the boy by alarm, Connie basically forced the phone into his hands as he gazed down at it. He had a hesitant look on his face before slowly raising the phone to his ear.
"Hi Nov- hi.." was what he managed to say in a quiet and airy voice. The boy looked calm but inside, his heart was beating faster than ever.
The phone was silent for a second before he heard her soft voice. He'd be lying if he said he didn't feel a small part of him warm up to the sound of it.
"Hi Adam.."
The boy wanted to ask her how England was. Part of him knew he should have. However, he couldn't muster the strength to do it.
Adam opened his mouth to speak but instantly shut it as he felt his throat go dry and his eyes brimming tears.
Connie looked at him with furrowed eyebrows. For a short second, she was relieved to finally see them talk to one another. However, the moment had long passed when Adam forcefully gave her the phone and walked back to his seat.
With bewildered gazes, she exchanged looks with Averman, Charlie and Guy before they all glanced over to where Adam looked down at his sheet in a daze.
Connie knew that it would be a tough process but she couldn't help but be disappointed in the blond boy.
With a sad gaze, she looked away from Adam and began talking to November again. Upon three seconds of hearing her voice, she could already sense the pain that Nova had felt at the moment. That pain even radiated to Guy, Charlie, and Averman.
However, the pain didn't radiate to Adam. The pain didn't need to radiate to him. He already had it. And really, the part that had pained him most, no matter how hard he tried not to, he couldn't help but listen in on the conversation in the distance- part of him wishing it were him holding the phone and talking to the girl 3'906 miles away.
Brynn speaks !
So I'll probably do these more- like switch it from England to Minnesota each chapter... but idk. I'll just go with the flow 🤠
