THE RINGING OF THE phone woke November up that very early morning as she grumbled out of bed to answer it before anyone else woke up. She didn't care who was calling, the girl was ready to tell them to shove off.
As Nova placed her hand on the phone, a short but strong wave of deja vu waved over her. For a moment, she was taken back to all the times Adam had called her in the middle of the night with an excuse to cover up that he really just couldn't sleep. For the first time in forever, Nova wasn't at her grumpiest state early in the morning. Simply, for once, part of November had hope towards who was on the other side of the phone-line.
"Hello.." Nova answered with a raspy and moody voice as she rubbed her eyes and lazily leaned against the wall
Instantly, an irritated voice let out an exasperated groan. "I'm going to skin those varsity jerks"
"Connie we got them, it's fine" She heard Julie's voice through the phone
Nova drew her eyebrows together and rolled her eyes. "C-Connie? What the hell?"
"Nova!" Connie exclaimed, "ugh! Alright, you'll never believe what happened.."
Nova huffed out a frustrated breath, "hold on Connie." Tiredly, November walked over to her closet and pulled out the ducks jersey she wore in the final against Iceland. Regularly, she would just wear a hoodie but at the moment, the girl was much to tired to care. November made her way to the phone and walked out the door, stretching the cord around the wall. "Ok I'm in the hallway because I don't want to wake anyone- it's cold, hurry this up.."
"Wake anyone up?" Connie started in a confused tone, "why are you asleep... it's Saturday tomorrow"
Not that Connie could see but November let off dumbfounded look at her quite stupid remark. Nova pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed. "Because..." Nova began with her voice raising by every word, "have you forgotten that I'm in Europe and it's four in the freaking morning!"
"Oh..." was all that Connie let off as Julie let out a loud sigh beside her, "I forgot it wasn't 10 o'clock for you.."
"Whatever.." November grumbled, "so what happened at the dinner"
"Those stupid varsity jerks pranked us is what happened," Connie started before Julie took the phone from her to finish off, "they said it was their treat so of course, none of us brought wallets but then, surprise! JV stinks and we have have to work off $800 worth of food"
Needless to say, November's Jaw was agape as she furrowed her eyebrows in shock. That was definitely not what she was expecting to hear. "Seriously.." she said in slight disbelief, "even Adam?" The last part was more intended to be a whisper to herself but Connie and Julie had heard it clearly and couldn't help but exchange nervous glances with one another.
"Yeah.." Connie began nervously, "one more thing happened.."
November felt her breathing hitch as if she were afraid to hear what Connie were to say next; though she was. She unconsciously played with the stretched cored as she leaned up against the wall and mentally prepared herself for what she could potentially hear. "Okay... what happened.."
"Um.." Julie spoke up, "we may or may not have taken fire ants and put them in their dorms and this and that happened so now we're having a game tomorrow morning.."
There was a slight silence through the phone as November drew her eyes together and registered everything that had been put through. She really didn't know what to think except slight disappointment towards all her friends and former teammates. "Are you all out of your minds?" November finally spoke in a more nonchalant voice than than expected as she was trying to not wake anyone. "Why would you guys do that?"
"They started it!" Connie cried out, causing Nova to just shake her head in disappointment
"Stop, you're sounding like Jesse," Nova began to lecture, "what happened to your dignity?"
"It needed a vacation." Julie joked sarcastically before she retorted in a calmer tone. "Besides, we're just getting revenge"
"But that just makes you as bad as they are!"
"At least we're not as bad as Adam" Connie grumbled. Instantly, November shut her eyes and shook her head in disappointment. She let out a sigh and bit the inside of her cheek, thinking of ways to reply.
"Look guys," Nova began, "I know you guys are mad and I would be too but you can't blame him... you know Adam, he wouldn't do something unless he had no choice... he probably didn't know." The phone was quiet as November took a pause before speaking again, "and I don't know how he's doing... I don't know what's going on in his life; how could I? But you never know what he's going through... being on a new team and all- it's hard, you can't blame him.."
"She's guess she's kinda right..." Julie whispered to Connie, more intended for Nova not to hear.
Connie pursed her lips together and nodded at blonde before turning her attention back to the phone. "Well.. what's done is done.." Connie sighed, "Charlie will probably give us crap if we don't go tomorrow morning... we should sleep"
"Charlie?" November asked
Julie sighed and took the phone to speak into. "He's going mental.."
"I wouldn't say mental-"
"Mental.."
Nova couldn't help but listen in confusion as Connie and Julie talked about the change Charlie's attitude had gone through in the last few weeks. November couldn't help but feel horrible as she watched the team slowly break apart and she couldn't do anything about it.
"Anyway..." Julie sighed in defeat, "we really should sleep... gotta get up early tomorrow"
Nova nodded and squinted her eyes as she looked out towards where the sun was just about rising. She just sighed and let out a shrug. "Well I can't sleep anymore," She grumbled before pursing her lips together in a small smile, "don't do anything else stupid"
"We'll try our best," Connie chuckled. There was a pause as the three girls stayed on the phone with one another. For a while, Nova thought to just hang up but it didn't take Connie long to speak up again. "We can't make any promises on behalf of Charlie though.."
Nova nodded in agreement and disappointment as she bit the inside of her cheek and sighed. She couldn't do anything but pray that her former teammates didn't do anything stupid to tear them apart from one another. To Nova, it was like tearing apart a family. Simply, as much as she wished she could physically be there for her teammates, she couldn't. All she could do was hope they would be alright. Even Adam Banks; especially Adam Banks...
Brynn speaks !
