Chapter 2- Crash

Katie was still, arms tightly looped around Lemia and Delphie, hiding their forms with her own body. With her thin eyebrows furrowed, she met the blonde woman’s stare with courage. No move was made. Shiro stayed upon the man’s stature, holding him down easily despite the pounds of muscle the other displayed. Delphie and Lemia coward behind Katie’s quaint frame, tiny hands gripping ever-so-tightly onto her Altean wear.

“I said let him go,” the woman insisted, shoving the gun closer to Katie’s face. In response, the teen stood strong and showed no sign of terror, not even a slight flinch. From the corner of her eyes, she spotted Matt and Allura arriving. Allura, like herself, was not ready to fight anybody--the skirts that piled around their waists were clear indicators of that. Matt, though, was in a worse state than either of them with his loss of a leg from the incident three years ago. In its place was a work-in-progress electronic peg that the two Holt siblings were developing together.

The blonde pivoted, swiftly taking a spot next to Katie, the Earthian gun shoved against her ear. “Let. Him. Go,” she demanded, anger seeping through her hardened tone. The metallic cold muzzle pressing a circular indent onto Katie’s ear as the woman dug in harder. The blonde continued to speak, “Unless you want to see her insides, I suggest you get your friend off of my partner.”

Matt met Katie’s stare and understood that she was not one to give in to anything. He gently grabbed Allura’s elbow and pulled her in. After saying something quietly to her, he took one step forward using his prosthetic leg and fell. Allura crouched next to him, seeming to help him up.

Katie took the given opportunity to throw her elbow into the woman’s abdomen, hard. The blonde stumbled backward a step, Cain falling out of her grasp, while still aiming at Katie. Without hesitation, she pulled the trigger. However, the bullet never hit its intended target. The ship tilted following an explosion from inside the control room, the alarms flaring wildly all of a sudden. The bullet pierced the roof as the woman fell. Similarly, the others also lost their balance at the jerk, Shiro rolling off the man and Katie falling over Delphie and Lemia.

“The ship!” Allura called out, shock and confusion lacing her tone. She moved away from her husband and dashed off into the control panel to her best abilities in the quaky spaceship. Matt began to panic, struggling to get over to his daughters and sister while Shiro groaned from the spot next to them. The blonde rushed to gather up her partner in crime, pulling the unknown male away towards the escape pod. Katie attempted to stand to chase them, but her nieces clung to her with such strength that she couldn’t leave. From inside the control room, Allura yelled, “The ship is going down! The controls are busted and we’re losing oxygen.”

Another blast went off from within the control room. Allura flew out of the area in a panic, covered in soot and hair crisped. Matt motioned for her to join them as she coughed in distress. “What happened? Are you okay, honey?” the male brunet inquired, wobbling over to her in worry. The ship tipped, turning downward. Matt flew into Allura, the two falling to the floor with a scream. Cain tumbled off into a corner while Shiro wrapped himself around Katie and the two girls. The ship twirled, the alarms surrounding them in terror as they were scooted harshly across the floor.

The ship was falling, spiraling into the unknown. Is this how they died? Is this how she died? Wrapped in her brother’s best friend’s arms while she clutched her crying, shaking nieces in uncertainty as they fell further and further into the abyss of space?

A plant pot flew past their heads, clanging against the wall behind them. “Cain!” Katie shouted, reaching her hand out to the boy. He reached out his tiny hand, their fingers grazing each other. With one more inch, she could have grabbed his hand, but her arm was too short. Another hand, one larger and rougher, grabbed Cain and reeled him in. Shiro had assisted her in getting Cain out of greater danger.

Retracting her hand, Katie felt a little bit useless, her adrenaline and nerves still high. The three children snuggled closer to Katie and Shiro, the pair trying their best to protect them from falling parts and shifting objects. How do I make sure we don’t die, Katie thought to herself, desperately looking around. A sheet slid towards them and in a moment’s decision, she took a hold of it, wrapping the thick sheet around the children in hopes of better protection.

A loud boom enveloped them and their ears popped. They were falling even faster now, hurtling towards who-knew-what. Then, a good three minutes later, there was darkness. Nothingness enclosed Katie’s mind. A dream floated into existence, one of land far, far away that Katie never came to know. A place called Earth that her brother had told her: green as far the eye could see, the bluest water you could imagine. Well, at least where their parents had lived in a little town in a thick forest that’s how it was.

Katie dreamt she was there, in that village and she saw her parents. Colleen Holt, as beautiful as her pictures, twirling in dance with Samuel Holt, a regal and all-knowing man that Katie had only heard about from Matt. She had never met her parents, so seeing them in her dream was confusing--more likely due to her dad looking more like Matt then he was supposed to and that she had never seen her mother moving.

The little Earthian village was lively in her dream, smiles worn on every face as laughs filled the warm air. Katie saw Matt and Allura dancing too, Allura’s long white hair swirling around the pair as they moved. Matt’s hair was short again, not the longer length he keeps it nowadays. It was more of a style from their youth that rested upon his head as he dipped Allura. Was she dead? Did she die on the ship? Katie looked around to see if she could find her nieces and nephew, but they weren’t in sight. She searched and searched, but the three were nowhere. She didn’t see Lance or Shiro either. Did that mean that only her, Matt, and Allura died?

A loud whirring sound came from above and she saw a huge ship on fire, coming straight towards the square of dancers. Confused, she watched it get closer as a familiar feeling of dread settled at the pit of her stomach. Onboard, through the glass, she could see Cain, Lemia, and Delphie. The ship crashed before Katie’s eyes, right in the middle of the square. Dust and sand swarmed around her body, getting into her hair and eyes despite her attempt at covering them.

Then there was light and she saw the sky through a hole in metal. Not the same sky from her dream, but one with purple accents and yellowish clouds. She sat up and winced. Her entire body hurt and was heavy. Looking downward, she realized that there was a bundle upon her lap. It was her nieces and nephew that she wrapped up in a blanket. They sat on her lap, faces uncovered and dirtied. Katie checked each of them, relieved to find each of them breathing. Though, Cain did have blood dripping down his petite face, a stark red crimson shining in the slivers of light that made it through the hole.

To her side, she heard a deep groan as Shiro arose from his slumber. He rubbed his face before he opened his eyes. He froze once he caught sight of the sky and the remainder of the ship. Jerking upright, Shiro twisted his other arm that was trapped under a fallen scrap. He hissed in agony, giving his limb the proper attention. Shiro’s ribbon had fallen out and his dark hair pooled around his shoulders. She noticed his tunic was ripped and that he had lost his sheer vest.

Katie opened her mouth to speak, but coughs came out instead. Mid coughing fit, she spotted blood was on the palm of her hand. She gazed at it and looked at her torso, noticing that her dress was torn and blood seeped out of a thick puncture on her side. She was wounded.
