I was seated at the head table between the serious-faced potions professor and the toad woman I learned was the Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher appointed by the Ministry of Magic. I picked at my food, too nervous to eat, especially with all the students watching me.

When the toad faced woman, who Dumbledore introduced as Dolores Umbridge, started a long-winded speech about how she was elected by the Minster himself for this position and what she expected, I completely zoned out. I was here to do the job Dumbledore hired me to, it didn't matter to me what she was talking about. All I wanted was to find my bed and go to sleep so I could get familiar with the grounds first thing in the morning.

Unluckily for me, I hadn't paid attention to where the house-elf took my bag. I had no idea where the hell my rooms were. Wandering the halls, I began making a mental map of the corridors I would patrol.

I made my way down to the dungeons, where the halls were so dark I couldn't see a thing. Holding out my hands, I gathered shadow, pulling it with my magic and forming it into two sleek little cats. I commanded them to run the length of the hall, using my mind's eye to see in the dark through their eyes. Nothing but locked doors.

"That's an interesting trick."

I spun on my heel to find the potions professor standing behind me, an amused look on his face. I relaxed a bit, letting out a breath I hadn't realized I had been holding.

"Sorry," I said, my voice echoing in the empty corridor, "I'm a little lost."

The potions professor raised an eyebrow, "Oh? Come on then, you can rest for a bit in my office while I ask the elves where your room is."

Tentatively, I followed him into an office filled with vials and ingredients for every potion conceivable. I was busy taking in everything when he said, "I don't believe we were introduced at dinner. I am Severus Snape, the Potions Professor here at Hogwarts."

I nodded, shaking the hand he extended to me. He had a strong grip, and now that I was closer to him, I could tell he smelled like herbs.

"You can wait here," He said after a moment, "I'll find where your rooms are."
