jinyoung can admit, he's a bit of a def. fanboy.
well, fanboy isn't how he would say it. he loves and respects the artist's music, able to analyze and also add his own meaning to his songs. but he also wants to know how the man feels when he writes and sings his songs.
it's something very common among people who like the underground artist. they don't know much of anything about the singer, including even what his face looks like.
so when jinyoung sees a flyer for a def. concert, he knows he has to go. it might be his one chance to see the artist live. so of course he also makes his best friend go with him.
jinyoung is a bit ashamed to admit how excited he is to see his favorite artist because he feels like a teenage girl but he doesn't know the next time def. will do a live show and he can't imagine missing it.
he brings his best friend mark who had heard def.'s music so many times just being around jinyoung, he knows plenty of his songs anyway. and he pays for mark to go, so mark doesn't really care anyway.
"bam would love it here," mark says as he looks around the club. the lighting alone would make the younger want to dance all night, but he wasn't feeling well and didn't want to go and ruin the night for mark. but mark would never leave his sick boyfriend home alone, so his best friend yugyeom is there to hang out with him because bambam insisted mark still go.
jinyoung almost feels nervous. there's a pit in his stomach and he doesn't know why but he just tries to brush it off and assumes it's just excitement.
it's just minutes before def. is supposed to preform. mark is texting yugyeom to check up on how bambam is doing and jinyoung is talking to someone about def.'s music until mark taps his arm to get his attention.
mark points to the side of the small stage where; who they can only assume is def., is standing and waiting. it's dark so they can't see his face but as he starts walking to the middle of the stage, a brighter light shines on him for just a little bit.
"oh my fucking god," jinyoung gasps, unable to keep his reaction from coming out of his mouth.
"what?" mark asks because that's probably the last reaction he expected from his best friend seeing his favorite artist.
"remember jaebeom?"
the mention of jinyoung's high school boyfriend makes mark do a double take at the man standing on stage. and mark knows why he asked.
def. is lim jaebeom, jinyoung's ex boyfriend of nearly 4 years.
and it's obvious that jaebeom sees jinyoung too. they make eye contact and jaebeom stops looking around for just a few seconds. the club is small, there's no way for jinyoung to hide from the view of the other man.
they stay for the set because jinyoung can't say he doesn't still love the music. it brings him a sense of happiness that had been missing since... he and jaebeom broke up.
"i'm a fucking idiot. i should have recognized his voice," jinyoung whispers to himself, unable to stop watching the performance no matter how much he wants to.
it took jinyoung years to get over jaebeom, even if he was the one to end their relationship. but now he feels every emotion flooding back into his body and it's overwhelming.
the set ends and jinyoung is desperate to leave. he start looking for the exit but turns around when he feels a tap on his shoulder by who he assumes is mark. until he sees mark standing right next to him, looking at his phone.
he turns around and is face to face with lim jaebeom. for the first time in eight years.
"hi," jaebeom breathes out as he lowers his arm and lets it hang by his side, "hi, mark."
"hey," jinyoung says softly back. not even he can't hear his voice over the music playing but it doesn't matter.
"i didn't think you'd be here. i didn't think you'd listen to my music," jaebeom admits, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand.
"yeah... i actually didn't know it was you. i should have recognized your voice."
"do you want to hang out? and i can take you home?" jaebeom asks suddenly just after jinyoung finishes speaking.
"mark, i'll talk to you tomorrow, you can leave. i know you miss bam," jinyoung says to mark who takes the opportunity after giving a slight nod to jaebeom.
jinyoung follows jaebeom out of the club but out a back door where his car is closely parked. it's so much easier to hear each other the moment they walk outside but it also means jinyoung is even more nervous because it's only him and jaebeom now.
"how have you been?" jinyoung asks once they're both sitting in jaebeom's car. jaebeom turns the car on but only to roll down the windows because it's nice a nice night.
"i've been good. you know what's weird? i was just thinking about you the other day because i found something of yours i didn't even realize i still had," jaebeom tells him. he speaks fast because he's nervous. he didn't think he'd ever seen jinyoung again.
"what is it?"
"a hoodie. your old green one." jaebeom knows that jinyoung is completely aware of what hoodie he's talking about it. he can still remember the day jinyoung gave it to him. "but how have you been?"
"i've been okay."
they don't talk for more than an half hour before jaebeom offers to take jinyoung home. his apartment is less than 10 minutes away and jinyoung is so close to walking up to the building once he gets out of jaebeom's car but he can't. he can't convince himself to let jaebeom leave.
"do you want to come inside and hang out for a while?"
and jaebeom doesn't say no.
"your music made me feel complete and i don't think i'd felt that way since we broke up," jinyoung admits. they're sitting on his couch, both sitting sideways to face each other.
neither have changed very much, only having grown into who they were just becoming to be when they broke up. they both know who they are now, something that jaebeom was especially struggling with during their senior year.
"so you didn't know it was me at all?" jaebeom is almost shocked but he knows his speaking and singing voice aren't necessarily the exact same and he's grown in his singing abilities since when he would just mess around in trying to write songs for jinyoung and nervously sing them to him.
"no. to be completely honest, if i had realized it was you i probably wouldn't have been able to handle listening to your music. i think about you all the time. mark still has a picture of the three of us at his place and every time i see it, i regret breaking up with you."
it's been eight years but you don't just forget your soulmate. jinyoung had just been stupid enough to think jaebeom wasn't the most amazing person in the world.
"you know i never cheated on you, right? you were and still are the most amazing thing that's ever happened to me and i knew it back then."
"jackson admitted he made it all up a week after i broke up with you but i assumed you never wanted to talk to me again."
the two lay on the couch, face to face, and jinyoung can't help but wrap his arm around jaebeom's waist and pull him just a bit closer.
"i miss you, nyeongie," jaebeom admits quietly because it's scary to say. he almost feels stupid about missing his ex boyfriend from eight years ago but jinyoung isn't just an ex boyfriend. it's his soulmate. the love of his life. someone he barely knew how to live without.
"i miss you everyday, beomie, so much."
