Are you insane!?
What were you thinking!?
It's been radio silence from Quinn for hours.
She just keeps staring out the window, face out of view from my eyes.
She hasn't moved from the window. Not once.
Not to look ahead, not to wring her hands or bite her lip.
Not even to look at me.
Enough, Asher!
I shake my head and look back at the road.
I took it too far earlier. I touched her.
I almost kissed her, for gods sake.
Focus on the mission, human.
I swallow a scowl.
It's been a while, Milos.
My demon chuckled. I haven't had to tell you to focus in a long while. You've always been ready to complete a mission, no questions asked. What's changed?
I look over at Quinn.
Milos sighs. A girl, really?
Shut it, I hiss
Awww. Did I hit a nerve, Ashy? Milos crooned.
Enough!
I slam a barrier around my mind, shutting out Milos.
I must have been grinding my teeth and squeezing the steering wheel because when my vision finally focuses, Quinn's hand are squeezing my own.
"Asher, are you alright?" She asks frantically.
Her eyes are wide and wild as she scans my face.
I breathe deep and loosen my death grip on the wheel, still going 60 mph down the highway in quarter till one traffic.
"Ok..." She breathes, releasing her hold as well, letting her hands fall delicately in her lap.
"I'm sorry. Got lost in my head, I guess." I laugh under my breath, trying to ease the tension.
She smiles weakly, obviously fumbling with something to say.
I can feel her questions bubbling to the surface.
But before she can say anything, her stomach growls.
She turns red and wraps her arms around herself.
I tip my head back slightly and laugh.
"Hungry, Danes?"
"Funny." She glares at me before her face crumbles into a smile.
Her smile alone outshines the sun itself.
That was so cheesy.
Mmm. A cheeseburger would be heavenly.
"Care for burgers?" I glance at the exit sign, eyes locking on a fast food franchise.
"Oh I would kill for one. Gram made the best Burgers." Her face lights up for the shortest time before dropping at the mention of her Grandmother.
I smile sadly. "Burgers it is."
But she turns back to the window, shutting me out.
. . .
"You got extra cheese right?" Quinn asks, digging through the bag of greasy, but satisfying food, while I blast the heat in the car where we sit in a parking spot.
"Yeah," I say, breathing in the wonderful scent of food.
She divides the bag between us both, her with a plain cheeseburger, large fries and a coke and me eating double cheeseburger with onion rings and a orange soda.
We eat in silence for a few minutes until Quinn smiles.
"What?" I laugh just looking at her amused face.
"You-you got a little-" She giggles as she wipes away my cheek, cleaning the food from my clumsy mouth.
"Oh." I blush a bit, embarrassed.
"Are you always so messy when you eat?" She smirks.
"Yes."
I guess I startled her from being so blunt because she blinked and laughed.
"Wonderful." She croons.
Beautiful silence as she stares at me.
"Who are you?"
Now its her turn to startle me.
"I'm sorry I haven't asked before. It's been so crazy these past few days. But I'd like to know your story."
I'm so blindsided I just blink and stare.
"Asher?"
"Oh-yeah sorry, sorry. Well," I fumble with some kind of backstory I've been taught for all my missions.
But my mind is telling me lie to her, but my mouth isn't wanting to obey.
But I do.
"I'm an orphan. My brother and I were at a group home pretty much our entire life before we were adopted and moved to different homes. We lost contact after that."
She seemed to swallow this information and gather more questions.
"When did you get-you know...The demon?"
Interesting.
"Why do you call it that?" I ask.
She looks deep into my eyes, and her hands starts shaking the tiniest bit.
"Because it's talking to me."
