When we left Quinn's house, Conan was still unconscious.
So was Quinn.
Driving down the highway, the sun started to peak through the trees and the dawn's rays began to warm the earth.
I looked toward Quinn in the passenger's seat for the fifth time in two minutes.
She had exploded. That power made my own freeze for a few seconds.
That's never happened before.
I had a feeling that my employer isn't telling the full truth about who she is. What she is.
I could feel her pain. The loneliness. It killed me.
When she shoved me out of the way, I knew she was gone and her demon...
It was ready to play.
Quinn's messy bun was completely destroyed now, hair hanging loose on her bare shoulders.
She wore a silk tank top and shorts. Barely covering her. It was freezing. Why would she wear that?
I looked back toward the road, scanning the road signs signaling any store I could stop to get her proper clothes.
I sighed and looked back at her once again.
She was curled up into a ball, almost like she was protecting herself, even in sleep.
She doesn't let anyone in. I've figured that out in only a few days that I've known her.
I couldn't blame her. Her life is a lie.
She inhaled slowly and exhaled even slower.
It must have taken a lot out of her. I could tell she didn't know what she was the second I saw her big brown eyes. So innocent.
So beautiful.
Enough, Asher! I shook my head and looked back at the road.
You have a mission and you will complete it. Don't get side tracked.
5 miles to Exit 79: Guy's food and clothes hut!
I cringed. Better than nothing.
I heard Quinn take a sharp intake of breath.
I whipped my head toward her as her eyelids fluttered open.
She looked around groggily, then her eyes widen and she tensed as she saw me.
"A-Asher?" she asked hoarsely.
"Hey. How are you feeling?" I asked gently.
She sat up in her seat, probably savoring the heat blasting through the vents.
She looked into my eyes, like she saw my demon beneath my skin and remembered.
"W-what... what are you?"
What am I authorized to tell you...
"It's complicated, Quinn. But I can tell you this, I am never going to hurt you. In fact, I was hired to protect you."
She pushed closer toward the door. "Hired? Hired by who? Why? Protect me from what?! Myself!? I don't even know what in the world I did last night! It's all murky and painful. It hurts to think about it..."
Her voice faded away as her eyes teared up.
My heart hurt. Stop, Asher.
"Everything will come clear once explained. It's gonna be ok."
Her eyes flared and a bit more of herself came back.
"Ok. So explain."
I sighed and cleared my throat.
"It's not something I, Myself, can explain. But I'll take you to someone who can."
She seemed to devour this information, and pulled herself together.
She sat up in her chair, lifting her small hands to her hair, letting the little hair still left in her bun fall to her shoulders.
She didn't tie it back this time, instead let her curls go freely.
I sucked in my breath and looked back to the road.
She wiped her eyes and turned in her chair to me.
"So when are we meeting this person?" She asked.
I laughed under my breath. "Soon. But first you need some other clothes then the pretty silk you're wearing."
She blushed bright red and covered herself with her arms.
I laughed hard and vibrant.
"U-uh-YOU!" She scowled and hit my arm.
I laughed harder. It was so easy to get a rise out of her.
She sighed and we both looked out the windshield.
It was minutes of a weird kind of silence before a sniffle.
I turned my head to see Quinn's eyes again spilling with quiet tears.
"What am I gonna do? I've left everyone I know and love to meet someone who will tell me what I already know." She said surprisingly steadily.
"What do you mean?" I asked softly, pulling into the exit, and halting at the red light.
"I'm a nobody."
I resumed the car forward at the green light and turned into the awful shop of "Guys food and clothes hut" and pulled into a open spot, turning the car off.
"No, Quinn."
I turned to her.
"You are so much more."
