What the...?

I was still shaken from that moment when my hand almost betrayed me and swept that lock of hair behind Quinn's ear when Gram came limping into the room, clearly distressed and said:

"Kayla never came home today."

Quinn immediately jumped to her side and let Gram lean on her.

"Gram, what's happening? Who's on the phone?" She leaned closer to phone as if to hear someone on the other side.

Gram breathed deep and slow before saying, "We must go home. Maurisa is in a panic-"

She turned to me, remembering I was still here, and gave me a weak smile. "I'm sorry, Asher, but we must go. Can you find you way out of here?"

I nodded and stood up before kissing her head. "Yes Ma'am. Good luck and stay safe." I looked at Quinn, her eyes hard and focused on her Grandmother. "See ya, Quinn."

She gave me a slight nod before helping her grandmother towards the door. I jogged ahead of them and opened the back door and they hobbled out. I watched as Quinn helped her grandmother into the passengers seat before running around the front of the car, then swung herself into the drivers seat, and carefully but not slowly, drove away and into the oncoming traffic.

I blew out a breath and closed the back door and locked it using the key Gram had given me.

Kayla never came home today.

I glared at the dark, starless sky.

I breathed in and closed my eyes.

What have you done, Conan?

Conan

I sniffed at the air. I was getting closer to the target.

I was creeping inside the woods, letting the thing inside me lead the way.

It been 2 days since I got finally got the mission I've been waiting for.

It's also been two days since I've learned my brother was in the area.

No doubt playing the hero.

I sniffed again, my nostrils filling with the scent of my target and I felt my pupils expand in anticipation.

I finally found the clearing of the woods and came up next to a sidewalk and highway. I could see the target's neighborhood around the corner.

I snickered.

If only she would be able to reach it.

I quickly became silent as my target approached.

She was laughing on the phone. "Yeah, I think I'll skip my shift at the Diner tonight-"

The diner...interesting.

She continued. "Quinn will probably be worried but I'll explain later and she'll forgive me."

She paused walking and talking. "My mother will kill me, yes, but I want to spend time with you."

This is it. My opening.

I rattled the bushes.

She paused talking on the phone and stared directly at my location but the bushes gave me cover so she couldn't see me.

Yes...Yes now hang up.

She turned back to her phone.

I made more noise.

She whipped back to the bush. "I'll call you back." She pocketed the phone and slowly walked toward me.

"Hello-"

I pounced from my hiding place and grabbed her wrists. She cried out.

I slammed her onto the forest floor and held down her arms.

She squirmed and screamed, "HELP! PLEASE-"

I covered her mouth and whispered, "Shhhh."

She started to cry.

I felt my inner monster scream to be let out. I obliged it.

I leaned down and breathed, "Sleep."

Her eyes rolled back and she went limp.

I exhaled and pushed the power back inside me before hauling the target over my shoulder, her freshly manicured hands hanging limp. She smelled like citrus.

Focus. You know what you have to do.

As I walked deeper into the forest, I noticed the branches swaying and wind brushing my cheeks,  almost calling and welcoming me home.

Good luck protecting her, brother. I'm one step closer to completing my mission.

And I will complete my mission. At any cost.

I needed to do some investigating while Quinn was busy.

Correction, I need to find my brother...

It's not gonna be exactly easy.

I was currently standing in the parking lot of the diner, leaning up against my car, listening to the breeze, hoping for anything at all that could help me locate my brother's scent when I heard it.

Blood-curdling screams.

I dropped to my knees, cradling my head.

"God!" The screams filled my head.

Time consuming, glass breaking shrieking. I had trouble breathing.

One voice, breaking through the screams.

Watch it, brother. Or it will be her screams you hear next.
