Chapter 2
Commoner Li Lian
Princess Le-anne
The palace"Yuwen Hong, you owe me a wish," Li Lian rasped, "wake up and fulfil the wish you promised." She remembered the time she slapped him six times, and chose not to give him the seventh slap in exchange for a wish. She had reserved it in case one day he hated her for being the daughter of his father's murderer. Then, she would hold it against him to forgive her as that would be considered her wish. What use was that for now?
Tears dampened her cheeks while her hands were blood red. She took him up in her arms, cuddling him.
He was a heavy one. Her Grand General was so strong.
"You were the only person that really cared for me, except Ai. But now you are leaving me too... like Nameless did..." Her chin trembled like a child's, keeping herself from weeping loudly. She wanted to have him to herself as much as possible, thus she was keeping it quiet. Once they found them, they would be separated forever.
This was their goodbye.
"In the ugliest of ways, I enjoyed having someone care for me more than I cared for them. It made me feel important." She kissed him on his temple. Snort and tears wrecked her face but it didn't matter. What mattered was in her arms.
Li Lian started to hum a song, like she was lulling a child to sleep. It was a song that spoke about a lost child. Whether that child will ever find his way home. If her home was with the people she cared for, Yuwen Hong included, will she ever be home?
Inside, she was traumatised by the loss piercing her heart. The realisation that the person who loved her most was gone was something she hoped to ignore as long as possible.
She never got to sing for Yuwen Hong. What would he think of her voice? Would he smile, that carefree smile that made his eyes twinkle or would he give her one of those dirty smirks? As the lullaby danced on her lips, fireflies above also danced around her. They were a swarm that breezed in from nowhere, a little light in her darkness.
Was this what took place when the dragon fell? Nature paid respect to him?
"Your Highness! Here you are! I was so worried about you," General Feng ran to her but his feet faltered when he saw them. "Huài le," the first time she heard General Feng curse in her presence, "who did this?" He pushed her aside, taking Yuwen Hong from her. She wanted to take him back, but what use would it be to throw a tantrum?
He easily cut Yuwen Hong's garments with intent to use the cloth to soak his blood, slowing the bleeding. "I think he has lost too much blood. A relief you didn't pull out the sword."
If the sword was not pulled out correctly, it could lead to further bleeding or damage to unaffected organs too.
Still on her knees, she looked blankly at General Feng who tended to Yuwen Hong. "He is dead," she muttered. Li Lian felt every pore of hers weep in remorse. "He is dead and I killed him." Her insides shredded, her brain shutting down. It was better that she became a zombie. What did Yuwen Hong do other than being the nicest man to her? Didn't he say the other time that, if she needed him to fix her world he could do it for her? He was so nice and good to her.
"Your Highness, you have to pull yourself together. They can't find you here or they will have you implicated." General Feng was pulling her up but her legs were limp to support her.
"He is dead, General Feng," she pulled away wanting to lie by Yuwen Hong's limp body. Better to die with him.
"Li Lian, get yourself together!" General Feng snapped. His agitation was expected. After working with Yuwen Hong for so long, he probably was in mourning too. And she killed him.
