NYA

When Jay screamed over the group channel, his voice ragged and fearful, nobody had to stop and think. There was no plan. Everyone made hasty excuses and raced back to the Bounty.

He's in trouble.

Nya didn't realize she was using Airjitzu until Kai marveled, "What's that?" There wasn't time to explain, and she flew ahead of the others. They tried to catch up, but Spinjitzu wasn't made for traveling vertically. Her flying tornado glowed brighter than usual and she reached the ship far before the others did.

Her thoughts were only fixated on Jay. When she saw him, she gasped and let out a shout of fear and worry. He was in far more trouble than she anticipated.

Nadakhan was attacking Jay, who was curled up in a ball, shielding his head and face from the weapons. It was worse than any form of torture Nya had ever seen, and she was terrified to her core for him. The ninja's blue gi was red and the Bounty's boards were slick with-

Nya threw up in her mouth, tears pouring uncontrollably from her eyes as she approached the ship. Her foot caught on the edge of the Bounty, sending her off-balance and crashing onto the floor. Her ankle twisted painfully underneath her and she yelped in pain, but forced herself up and dragged herself down the ladder, watching a nightmare unfold before her.

It had hardly been a fight. Jay didn't use his nunchucks or powers when he was defending himself from the genie. It was as if he had forgotten how to fight back.

Nadakhan spotted the Water Ninja and smirked, vanishing into thin air.

Not that it mattered.

Jay was lying on the deck, bleeding from countless wounds all over his body. His usually bright eyes were shut in pain. She could barely see the freckles on his cheeks, there was so much blood. His auburn hair was matted and choppy as if it too were attacked by swords. A strained cry came from his throat.

"No, no, no," she whispered, taking his hand and gently shaking it. "Jay, get up!" she cried, resting his head in her lap. "Please!"

He's just unconscious. He'll wake up and be fine.

"No," she whispered over and over. They blended together like a chant, the meaning lost in her mind.

No, no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no.

The rest of the team finally made it to the Bounty and sprinted to her side. Nya's voice was choked and rough as she saw his eyes flutter. "Jay? Jay! Jay! Can you hear me? Say something! JAY!"

His dulled eyes focused, with difficulty, on her face. They were filled with hurt and pain, and sapphire blue met with dark brown, both watering for different reasons. Jay didn't say anything, but Nya understood all the millions of little things he wished he could.

"No," she whimpered. "Jay, please, you have to stay alive. Don't leave me."

Jay's eyes dimmed and he closed them, exhaling softly.

No.

She fumbled for his wrist, her heart pounding far too fast, and she tried to get a pulse with her thumb, then realized her mistake and switched fingers. Her index and middle finger touched the skin exposed from his torn gi, and she waited.

The only pulse she felt was her own.

---

Nya was unable to speak words. She could only scream.

She screamed for what felt like forever, unaware that all the oceans and seas across Ninjago receded from their beaches and suddenly crashed down in twenty-foot tall waves, flooding cities and storming on the coasts. All she could do was cry, the tears not stopping.

She had a strong feeling that she wouldn't ever recover as her heart shattered into dust.

Jay.

Jay.

Jay.

She didn't see it, but behind her, the boys collapsed onto the deck. Kai's choppy voice screamed "NO!" and Cole, locking himself in his mind, punched the floor with so much pain he broke through the wood. Nya wasn't able to see the way Lloyd drew his knees to his chest and sobbed into his hands, knowing he had failed, or how Zane knelt perfectly still as ice unconsciously spread from his feet and froze the entire bow of the Destiny's Bounty. Sensei Wu gripped his staff tightly, unable to look at his ninja.

In her mind's eye, Nya recounted all the small moments she had spent with Jay: kissing in Mega Monster, how he stuttered when he was flustered, slicking his hair to the side in an adorable attempt to impress her, and the many times they fought together, cried together, learned together. She remembered the stacks of empty chocolate pudding cups by the trash and the hand buzzer he would sneak onto his palm. She remembered when she was poisoned with Tiger Widow venom and died in Jay's arms, who then reversed time and made that never happen.

Nya couldn't reverse time. She knew better than to mess with that. But she wanted to. So badly. Why did he have to leave her? And especially now. Now was the worst time for him to leave her.

All the memories of Jay hurt her more than a knife to the heart. He was truly gone.

Permanently.

She would never look at his eyes light up when he had an idea or see him smile at her or laugh together at a terrible joke.

Jay was dead.

He had been there for her when she died, but now she couldn't do the same for him. She was selfish, leaving him behind and alone. They should have known that Nadakhan still could come back. They should have waited for him. But instead, because of their mistake, he was fatally injured by a djinn that only the two of them remembered.

Eventually, she knew her grief would become anger and she would get revenge. But it only seemed like there would be crushing sadness.

His words came to her.

We are one now, Nya.

With him gone, Nya might as well be dead too.
