Hannah was up late again. She started to get used to not sleeping very much. Lately she had just had a hard time falling asleep. She just stayed awake and thought about everything that popped up in her head. Sometimes it was serious stuff, sometimes it was really weird wonderings. She had always had a habit of overthinking things. Ever since she was little she always thought about things way too much. But it never concerned her a lot. Sometimes it was to her benefit, like when she's taking a test. If there is a problem she can't solve she doesn't give up on it until she has solved it.

That was just who Hannah was. She didn't give up on things.

This night, she was having an even harder time falling asleep. She wasn't thinking about anything special, she just couldn't fall asleep. Hannah always felt so sure that she was going to fall asleep eventually but this night was different. She didn't feel tired at all.

After tossing and turning in her bed for another half hour, Hannah decided to get up and get a glass of warm milk. It usually didn't help her fall asleep but at least it was something to do.

When she got to the kitchen she slowly walked over to the fridge and opened it. The light from it immediatley lit up the kitchen. She took a milk carton from the top shelf and closed the fridge again, revealing her brother behind the door. She was not prepared for it and jumped.

"Oh, God, Ashton, you scared me!" she yelled. Her brother, Ashton, just laughed a little and followed her to the counter.

"You're so easily scared, Han," he said and leaned against the counter. "It's almost a little pathetic."

Hannah poured milk into a glass and walked over to the microwave.

"Oh, yeah, because I was expecting you to stand right behind the refridgerator when I closed it," she said in a sarcastic tone. She opened the microwave and placed the glass in it.

"Shh, don't talk so loud. Mom and dad are asleep," Ashton said and laughed a little. "What are you doing up anyway?"

Hannah leaned against the counter next to her brother and looked up at him.

"I can't sleep," she shrugged. "Why are you up?"

"I can't really sleep either. Or I don't want to. I can't really tell the difference." Ashton opened up one of the cabinets and pulled out a bowl. Then he walked over to the cabinet next to the fridge and grabbed a packet of Cheerios. Hannah watched him as he poured himself a bowl of cereal, waiting for her milk to be ready. Just as Ashton finished pouring milk over his cereal, the microwave beeped. Hannah quickly opened it so the beeping would stop. She didn't want their parents to wake up.

"First you yell, then you let the microwave beep, do you want to wake our parents up?" Ashton asked and giggled a little. He always laughed at his own comments and it made him sort of dorky.

"Shut up," Hannah said and sat down opposite Ashton at the table. She looked down at her milk and realized she didn't want it anymore. It wouldn't work anyway.

They sat at the table in silence while Ashton ate his cereal. Hannah just sat there and looked out the window. Her mind wandered and she thought too much again. Before she knew it, she heard Ashton's voice behind her.

"Goodnight, Han. I'll see you tomorrow." He walked out of the kitchen and left her in the dark.

The next morning Hannah woke up by someone tapping her on the shoulder. She was a very light sleeper and woke up by every little thing.

"Good morning," she heard her mom say. "Why are you sleeping out here?" Her mom furrowed her eyebrows and sat down next to her. Hannah had her head rested on the table and her arms spread out in front of her. She snapped her head up and her black hair fell in front of her eyes.
