Fifteen: THE MISCARRIAGE

Alex spends the rest of the day at the hospital waiting for Kimberley to come out of surgery. Her aunt arrives a few hours after receiving the news about what happened at school. Debra finds Alex in the hospitals waiting room and tries to find out what happened.

Debra: “Alex, are you okay? How you holding up?” she asks and embraces him in a hug.
Alex: “I’m okay, how are you?”
Debra: “Well I’m just glad you got her to the hospital in time, if it wasn’t for you I-I don’t know what would have happened if she didn’t get here in time.”
Alex: “It’s okay she’s going to be fine.”
Debra: “I don’t know what I’ll do if I lost her too I mean I already lost my sister and I promised her I would look after Kimberly if anything happened and now this happens and I don’t know-”
Alex: “Hey hey hey, everything’s going to be okay. They doctors are doing everything they can and I won’t let anything happen to her.”
Debra: “I’m just so worried, I can’t lose her too I just can’t,” she starts to panic and pace around the waiting room.

A few hours later the doctor walks through the waiting room door.

Tony: “Alex, you’re with Kimberly right?”
Alex: “Yes I am and this is her aunt Debra.”
Debra: “Hi is she going to be okay? Please say she is,” she asks with tears in her eyes.
Tony: “Hi I’m Doctor Tony Sanchez, Kimberly has lost a lot of blood…she is going to be okay now, but she’s unconscious because of all the blood she lost and we don’t know when…or if she’ll wake up.”
Alex: “What?”
Debra: “Oh my goodness! So she’s…in a coma...again?”
Tony: “More or less yes and there’s more bad news unfortunately.”
Alex: “What else happened?”
Tony: “She didn’t tell you guys?”
Alex: “Tell us what?”
Debra: “Doc you’re not making any sense, I was away all weekend and she told me there’s something she wanted to talk about but after school, and clearly we didn’t get that far.”
Tony: “Well uhm, because of the large amount of blood loss…”
Alex: “Just say it doc!”
Tony: “She lost the baby as well…Kimberly was pregnant.”

Alex stands in shock processing what he just heard.

Debra: “That’s impossible the test I found in her trash can said it was negative.”
Tony: “It was a false negative; she was still very early in her pregnancy for it to be able to pick up on the test. That’s why when she was at the doctors earlier I took her urine sample and got it tested, and when the results came I called and gave her the news. I’m sorry for what happened but there was no way we would have saved the baby.”
Debra: “Poor Kimberly, she’s been through so much, thank you doc for your help.”
Tony: “Please call me Tony, she out of surgery now but she’s heavily sedated, after she wakes up you’ll be allowed to see her.”
Debra: “Thank you, Tony.”

Alex continues to stand in silence, he feels hurt that he’s never felt before.

Alex: “S-she lost her baby…o-our baby.”
Tony: “Alex I’m-”
Alex: “No!”

Alex storms out of the waiting room and leaves the hospital.

Debra: “I’m sorry, he’s a teenager and I’m sure she didn’t tell him yet. Let him cool down.”

Tony gives Debra sincere smile and heads back to the operation room to check on other patients. Debra decides to stay at the hospital to wait till she wakes up.

A few hours later

Alex comes back to the hospital and finds Debra sleeping in one of the chairs in the waiting room. He decides to wake her up so that she could go home.

Alex: “Aunt Debra? Wake up.”
Debra: “Alex? Where did you go off to earlier?”
Alex: “I just needed time to myself.”
Debra: “I understand, is Kimberly awake yet?”
Alex: “Nurses said should be a couple of hours still.”
Debra: “What time is it?”
Alex: “2 in the morning, you should get home I’ll stay here and wait till she wakes up.”
Debra: “Are you sure.”
Alex: “Yes I’m sure, plus you can’t sleep on these uncomfortable chairs.”
Debra: “Thanks, I’ll let you parents know where you are.”
Alex: “Thanks and I’ll call as soon as she’s awake.”
