They ate their meal in silence.

The light from the fireplace illuminated their figures and made shadows dance on the walls of the hut. Their previous episode of tardiness was in no way forgotten especially by Kukola who seemed a little too excited for Kulo's liking when Mama told her she could deal with them. It creeped Kulo out how Kukola was gave a toothless grin when she was told by Mama.

"Mama, why hasn't uncle joined us, he promised he would just before he went for the hunt with the other village men" Kulo broke the silence.

"Strange, now that I think of it, the same thing has been bothering me this evening. It is unusual for uncle to extend his time on the hunt beyond noon. He would surely send word if he did" Kona spoke with worry.

"And he always brings meat for us when he comes from a hunt, I was looking forward to the fine meat he always brings, he is good with the bow and arrow" Kukola added.

Kulo found it funny that Kukola could think of food at a time they were worrying for their uncle, it was his job to do that not Kukola. This had him snickering and made him earn a glare from Kukola.

"What is so funny,boy!"

He immediately shut his mouth. "Nothing grandmama, nothing at all"

"Enough you two" Mama silenced them "I too, find it strange that Njobu hasn't come to join us, I shall be sure to  ask tomorrow,"

With that silence fell on them again. It went on like that for some time then Kona started feeling uncomfortable not because of the silence but because of something that was pulling at his heart almost painfully. He immediately started feeling nauseous and felt like throwing up. As he stood from the mat  a  painful headache attacked him and he fell on his fours. He heard a loud ringing sound in his ears.He closed his eyes to block the pain.It wasn't working. It kept on increasing and was almost unbearable.

"Kona! Kona! are you okay?" he could hear his mother's frantic voice but it seemed to come from far away, distant.

"Of course he's not okay Mama, look at him,Mamaaa! he's  bleeding now!" that was Kulo's voice in the background and sure enough Kona could feel something wet trickling down his nostrils. What was happening to him?, he wasn't sick.

"Kona, Kona look at me open your eyes! Look at me! open your eyes Kona!" it was Kukola. He tried opening his eyes but the ringing seemed hell bent on tormenting him and it increased with a vengance. He saw dark blotches in his vision and immediately closed his eyes again. He grunted in pain and as if it wasn't enough he had difficulty drawing air in his lungs.

Now his whole body felt like it was in a hot furnace. Beads of sweat started forming on his temple. Another shot of excruciating pain tore through his body and it made him drop on the ground,he rolled on his back and arched upward as the pain became more and more unbearable. Then scenes started flashing before his eyes, they were unclear at first.

All he could see was blood, blood and more blood. He heard screams of pain and a man shouting commands then he saw a huge black beast jumping .A scream followed but was drowned by an almighty roar. What was this? Why am I seeing this?

Another shot of pain had his body jolting upward and convulsing painfully without mercy. He could hear his mother screaming his name in the background. The ringing in his ears increased even more to a point he thought would damage his ears beyond repair.

Then all of a sudden it all stopped.

It seemed as if time had frozen.

Just like that all the pain, the ringing in his ears and the scenes before him vanished. His body stopped convulsing and he started gasping for air.He opened his eyes and found three pairs of eyes gaping at him. One pair was in tears, the other was muttering something in the lines of young prince and the other was just blinking like he saw a yellow elephant flying in the sky with purple wings. I bet you can do the guessing which pair of eyes belonged to who.

"What just happened?" he asked breathlessly.

That's when the drums of death started beating and  the horn of summoning the spirits was sounded.
