Alex and I sat on the bus together, Brian grumbling in the seat behind us. He was leaving me alone, only because Alex was by my side. Alex walked with his arm around my waist causing some questioning looks from male students and evil glares from the girl population. I didn't enjoy all the attention, but my shyness was always a source of amusement for Alex. Alex was refusing to leave my side for as long as he possibly could, he had classes to attend, but he was more than willing to ditch them for me. I insisted though that he go to class and he complained, hugging me to him. My cheeks were pink when I finally managed to pull away and his smiled though his eyes were serious.

"Don't hesitate to come and get me if you need anything." He said pushing a stray strand of hair behind my ear, the movement was natural and close and I took a step back to breathe properly.

"Okay Alex, see ya later." I smiled.

Alex grinned at me before turning and leaving, and now that I was alone at my locker all eyes were on me. I hated attention and being stared at, I was self-conscious enough as is. I quickly grabbed my books and went to class, saying a silent prayer that today would end.

After school Alex came home with me to go to the Viniche Family Reunion that was today. I loved the family reunion. It was held at my Aunt's mansion that she owned that was by a huge lake. The place was exquisite and high class.

"Mom!" I called walking in the door.

"I'm upstairs getting ready!" She called back down.

I went up to my room, leaving Alex to get ready on his own. He knew where everything was. I went into my closet and began searching for something to wear, I didn't have many dresses, and an even smaller number of heels to match them with. This was going to be the most frustrating part of the evening. So there I stood in nothing but my bra and underwear in my closet as I tried to find something that would fit the classical scheme of the party.

After what felt like hours of searching I found a dress. I had worn it to a wedding once. It was a floor length blue gown that hugged my figure lightly. It was white underneath but had a see through blue overlay that gave it a free feeling. The sleeves were loose and elegant and gave me the appearance that I was gliding. I quickly slipped it on marveling at the soft feel of it against my skin. I sat down at my vanity and totally redid my make-up. I put on a silver eye shadow and rimmed my eyes with dark eyeliner before putting on mascara. I finished up with a light pink lip gloss.

"Are you ready dear?" My mom asked poking her head in the door.

"Yeah." I stood up grabbing a white clutch I was given a few years back, it fit the occasion. I slipped on a pair of sparkling silver heels that had a bow to the side of them and then walked downstairs where Alex was waiting for me. He wore black dress pants, and a black silk button up shirt. It suited him perfectly. He held out his hand and I took it lightly.

"You look so beautiful." My mom gushed like she always did, not that I minded.

The car ride was silent, Alex sitting in the front, me in the back. I looked out the window as the trees past us by with only faint glances at their changing leaves. The flowers on the side of the road blew back as we streaked by them, a shooting star in the night. Mom and Alex were talking about some new thing, something or other. I wasn't really paying attention.

"We're here Dear." My mom said as she hopped out of the car.

Alex walked around to my side and opened my door for me.

"Ma'dam." He said with a dramatic wave of his hand.

I laughed, "Remind me why I allow you to come to these sorts of things?" I questioned with a roll of my eyes.

"Because you love me." He said winking offering me his arm which I smiled and took.

"Yeah, sure. Keep dreamin'." I teased.

Inside the house was packed, people moving through the crowd of multicolored dresses and the usual black tuxedos. People hugged me, some of the people I didn't even really know who they were. I only smiled and nodded. Someone handed me a glass of sparkling water in a wine glass; fancy.

"Scarlett!" I heard the voice of my grandma call, her voice was soft, like the faint whisper of bells.

"Grandma!" I exclaimed as I saw her. I ran to her, well as well as I could in heels, and grabbed her small and petite form into a big hug.

"Oh my! You grow every time I see you." She said hugging me tightly.

"Either that or you shrink." I said playfully.

She laughed and gave a wave as she left, probably to find my mom.

"Scarlett? Is that you?" A voice called.

I turned around to see an old woman, I honestly had no idea who she was. I felt bad, because she knew me, but...I had no clue who she was. She didn't even seem familiar to me.

"Hello?" I said as I walked over to her smiling.

"You look so much like Maradith, it's so unbelievable." She said in awe as took a closer step to examine me.

"Maradith?" I questioned, the name didn't ring any sort of bell.

"Your moth-!" She began but stopped herself, and I watched as a shadow fell over her face, like she regretted something she said.

"Oh nothing Dear...nothing at all. Forgive my memory." She said as she walked off much quicker than I would have expected from someone of her age.

A red flag was raised in my mind but I pushed it away. As the evening turned to night the name Maradith was mentioned to me several more times, and every time I asked them they all had a face of regret and then they left as soon as possible. Who on Earth is Maradith? I'd talk to my mom about it later...

Who could Maradith be? *Ghost noises* Make sure to tell me what you think, I can benefit from ya'll inputs!
