People often say that facing their fears is a step of not being scared at all. Where were those people when I needed them?
As I played with my fingers, I could hear the beats of my heart pounding hard. I was nervous and it was obvious. I bit my bottom lip as Anna and I waited for the elevator to make its stop.
"Would you stop fidgeting your feet like that," Anna ordered with a rather amuse look on her face.
I rolled my eyes at her, knowing she was teasing me because I was nervous.
She and I arrived at the Hyatt Regency Resort a couple hours prior to the event. We managed to get settled in our rooms before getting ready for the party.
"Anna, I think this was a mistake," I whispered in her ear as we walked next to each other.
"Everything is going to be fine. You look gorgeous and we are going to have fun!" she exclaimed, making me smile. I was never one to dress up in fancy dresses only on special occasions. When Anna and I went shopping the previous day, she insisted of helping me out with an outfit. We both left the mall with a happy choice.
Anna wore an off the shoulder blue formal dress that looked amazing on her while I on the other hand bought an unusual strap long black chiffon beading evening dress with a slit that let me show my right leg.
We spent most of the afternoon doing our hair and makeup because she wanted to look great for the night. I on the contrary was dragged on all the decisions. I had fun with my best friend, and I hoped that tonight was not going to be different.
We stopped in one of the tables where we noticed some of our old classmates. They were giving away name tags and a specific envelope to each person that entered the room.
"Good evening, Anna Smith and Lilian Montgomery," Anna spoke, looking at the red head in front of her. She looked familiar, but I was horrible with names. I ignored the fact that I remembered her and started to observe my surroundings.
"Here you go," the red head replied, giving away two-name tags.
"Thanks!" Anna cheered, giving me the piece of paper with my name on it.
"Alright, this is it!" she added with a big smile covering her face, putting the name tag on her chest as I did the same.
We walked inside the room. It was decorated beautifully. The colors orange, black and white were mostly showed around because they were the school's colors. A lot of people gathered around the corners talking while others were sitting around different tables.
A DJ was playing with some tracks as we heard the music blast through the speakers but there was no-one dancing at the time. Everyone seemed like they were talking and catching up with each other.
Anna and I went to the bar area and ordered wine. We stood in a corner because we were not ready to sit down just yet. I knew why Anna was standing so close to the entrance. She had high hopes that her high school sweetheart was going to come by. Knowing that he made something of himself in the music industry I doubted he was going to come to such thing as his high school reunion.
I looked around the room and saw some familiar faces. As soon as I spotted the "it" couple of the school, I nervously turned my head around.
"Maddison is here with Mike," I whispered to my best friend. Maddison was one of the people that made high school a living hell for me. Being the typical beautiful girl of the school, she thought that everyone else that weren't part of her crowd was beneath her. This was one of the reasons I wasn't ready to come to the reunion. I didn't want to see these people.
