Celebration is an action marking a significant event by engaging in a social and enjoyable activity with people who care about one another. I wasn't fond of social events, because it wasn't what I was accustomed to. Growing up with just one friend and working hard every day made me dislike these sorts of activities, but the one I was witnessing was one I was never going to forget. The Haners sure knew how to throw an anniversary celebration. Everything looked classical and beautiful. Some people were showing their best moves on the dance floor while others enjoyed their time doing other things like talking, joking, and having a good time in general.
I stood behind the catering section, where Samantha and I had placed the trays of finger foods and wine for the entry. I couldn't do it alone, so one of my most trusted chefs at the club decided to give me a hand.
Everything was going according to plan. It was still early in the evening, which meant more guests were expected to arrive, including the Haner son.
"Lilian, the food is amazing, and I am sure the dinner is going to be as well. Thank you so much for doing this," Suzy exclaimed as she approached me in my little hiding place. I was glad that she loved my cooking. It gave me a purpose because it was my passion. My clients were happy, which made me ecstatic.
"Lil!" the voice of my best friend was heard as soon as Suzy retrieved herself to talk to other people. I hugged her, smiling.
"Hey, I thought you were going to be here before me, since you always love to be on time," I joked, and she laughed. Matt was behind her, and he waved a hand towards me.
"Hi, Matt," I greeted, kissing his cheek.
"Well, I would have been here sooner, but someone kept me waiting. Matty takes longer than me to get ready. Can you believe that?" Anna joked, motioning to Matt. I laughed.
"She is exaggerating it. She just doesn't want to say that we couldn't keep our hands off each other. That is the real reason we are late," Matt said, laughing. Anna turned red from embarrassment, but she was still smiling. I loved their silliness together, and it was surprising that they had a second chance to be together. Matt hugged Anna from behind and kissed the top of her head.
"Alright, we are going to sit at our table. Do you need help with anything?" Anna asked, looking behind me. I shook my head. "No, everything is taken care of, besides I have Samantha with me, so we are good. Go and enjoy your night. You both deserve it," I responded. I hugged her again.
Smiling towards Anna and Matt, while they walked away to their table, I saw the entrance of the venue. My heartbeat felt like it was going to stop altogether. Brian had finally arrived at his parents' anniversary gathering. He looked gorgeous, wearing a classic yet modern suit with no tie. His dress shirt was a little open, which made some of the tattoos in his chest visible. I turned around and kept myself busy.
I said I wasn't going to pursue him, but he still made me very nervous. Samantha noticed my reaction and walked towards me.
"Lil, are you alright? You went kind of pale," she said with a worried expression.
"Yes, I am fine. I just need a glass of wine, but I am working, so that wouldn't be professional," I replied, laughing.
"What if I insist? Saying no to the hosts' son, that would be a no-no, wouldn't it?" Brian expressed from behind. My eyes went wide as I investigate Samantha's smiling expression. She mouthed the words "turned around," and I shook my head.
I did as I was told, and Samantha walked away towards the kitchen area. Brian was in front of me, looking me up and down. I felt my cheeks blush. I smiled when he smiled at me.
