June 2nd, 1955

I know it's been a couple years since I've written. I almost forgot about this journal, until I found it while cleanin' the other day. Edwin II graduated today. He's movin' back up to Maryland with his mama for a couple months, before headin' off to Oklahoma for college. He wants to be a P.E. teacher, I think.

Eleanor teared up a little bit when he left, and Emily actually cried, even though she's not much of a crier. When she was little, I'd scold her for cryin' – I didn't want her to look weak. But it's gotta sting, seein' her brother move away for college, and not bein' sure when he'll be back home. I had to head inside immediately after he left, I didn't want them to see me tearin' up.

I'm just glad Emily's back into some type public school setting. She's still homeschooled, but the church nearby is offerin' some classes like public school, so she's been goin' to that. She doesn't talk to me too much lately. Maybe it's because she's "officially a teenager," bein' 13 and all. She never talks about her school friends, but she's still got Beverly.

They met when they were in first grade, and they've been best friends ever since then. Beverly's like our second daughter by now. Emily's got another friend, Marilyn, but they only met this year. They seem to be good friends already though.

I don't know much about Edwin II's friends – he doesn't talk to me all too much either, but Eleanor says I can't really blame him. She says I could be too harsh on him. But he's a boy. He should be able to take it.

Emily's got another "friend," Lloyd. I'm not too fond of this one. I'm nice because I know Emily likes him, but somethin's just off about him. And Eleanor agrees with me. Not to mention, he's a couple years older than Emily. I'm a few years older than Eleanor, but that's different – we're adults.

Hopefully Emily doesn't keep this one around for too long, or I'll have to dig out my old rifle.

As always,

– Edwin Myers
