6:30 AM
my alarm goes off, and I slowly get out of bed. I stretch, and turn off the alarm. I pet Patches, and turn on some music as I start to get ready for the day. I shower, brush my teeth, do my makeup, and get dressed. I double check everything in my bag, and walk downstairs.
I turn the water on for coffee, and get to work on making my lunch. I pack everything up in my bag. Pop just woke up, and he walks out of his room rubbing his eyes.
"Morning darling," He says as he gets closer to me. "Are you excited for your first day back."
"Yeah," I tell him. "It'll be nice to see Christopher."
The kettle beeps, and i make my french press. I finish making my coffee, and make some toast with orange marmalade, and a poached egg with salt and pepper. I sit at our table, and eat my breakfast, and drink my coffee. I finish eating, put my dishes next to the sink, and sit back down. I'm just waiting for Christopher to text me when he gets to my house. Of course when he gets to our driveway he decides to honk instead of texting me so he can get on my nerves.
"Dear lord. Does he have to do that?" Pop says startled.
"He's just trying to annoy me," I tell him. I kiss him goodbye, grab my bag, and walk out the door. I text Olivia to tell her that we're ready to pick her up. I get to Christopher's car, and trow my stuff in the back. I get in the front seat, and check my phone for a response from Olivia. Nothing.
"Delilah," Christopher says. "Well it's nice to see you too.
"Sorry Chris. Just trying to see if she's ready to be picked up."
"Yeah, but your best friend who you haven't seen in a bit is sitting right next to you."
I turn to him, and look him right in the eye. "Hi darling. I have missed you so very much. Now let's go pick up my neighbor and get to school."
"That's more like it," He says, and I tell him which house is Olivia's as we pull into her driveway.
"I guess I should go knock on her door," I say as I look at my phone. It's been five minutes, and she still hasn't responded to my text. I get out of the gar, and start to walk up the walkway to her house when I see Olivia on the sidewalk with her dog Hugo.
"Oh sorry. I had to walk Hugo. I just need to put him inside, and grab my stuff," she says nervously.
"Ok I'll just wait in the car," I say, and walk back to the car. When I get back in Christopher has his eyebrows raised at me.
"She's pretty."
"She's timid," I respond. Olivia walks out her door, and locks it. She walks over to the car with her head down, and climbs into the back. Christopher turns in his seat, and looks back at her smiling.
"Hi, I'm Christopher."
"Hi, I'm Olivia," she says barely making eye contact. He turns back to me smiling, and nods his head.
"Is there any music that you want to hear this morning," I ask Olivia. I'm trying as hard as I possibly can to make her feel comfortable, but it doesn't feel like anything is working.
"I'm fine with anything," she says.
"Who's your favorite artist?" I ask.
"I like waxcat," she says feebly.
"Ok. Any song specifically?"
"Head rush."
"Great," I turn on the song, and I listen as she quietly hums along with the song. The song comes to a close, and Rollercoaster by Bleachers starts to play. I turn back to look at her smiling.
"They're cool. I like that song," I say.
"Yeah. I've seen them live, and they're really fun," I smile. She opened up a little bit, and it's nice. We pull into the parking lot, and Christopher turns the car off, and pulls his key out.
"So you need to go to the office," I say. "I can take you there, and then I'll go to my class."
"Ok thank you."
We get out of the car, grab our stuff, and start to walk into the building. Christopher walks with us to the office. We drop her off with Mrs. Hoffman. She's our vice principal. She's old, grouchy, and completely useless. All she does is yell at us in the halls, and eat butterscotch candies.
"We're going to go to class," I say to Olivia gesturing between Chris and myself. "But tell me when you have lunch, and we'll see if we can eat with you," she nods, and Mrs. Hoffman takes her into the office. Chris and I turn, and start to walk to Mr. Lehman's room. We have Calculus together. Christopher is a wiz at math. I can be sure that he is going to be the one who gets me through that class this year. I'm not ready for having to take class with Mr. Lehman. I've heard that he's pretty strict, and his tests are difficult.
When we get in the room he gives each of us an assigned seat. I'm next to Christopher, and Samantha Keller. Sam is nice. We had ceramics together last year, and she's really talented. The way she works with clay is so interesting, and the forms she creates are always breathtaking. Mr. Lehman takes roll, and then he hands us his class syllabus. He starts talking about what we'll be learning in the first quarter, and the average workload.
"This is an AP class, and it is also an advanced credit. So naturally I expect your work to reflect that. You will need to take notes, and make sure that they are thorough. I will allow you to use notes on your tests so take advantage of that privilege."
After his speech we get started on our first lesson. The nice thing is he goes slowly, but dear lord this stuff is complex. Eventually the bell rings, and it's time to go to our next class. Christopher has AP Environmental Sciences, and I have Contemporary Economics. We go our separate ways, and I watch him round the corner. I walk down the hall, and reach Ms. Bailik's room. She's a tall thin young woman, and her room is very minimalistic, and orderly. Her family is Polish, and she speaks with somewhat of an accent. I took Macro-economics with her last year, and she recommended this class to me. I look up, and see Olivia walk in looking extremely flustered. Ms. Bailik gives her the seat next to me, and she puts down all her stuff, and takes a deep breath to try to steady herself.
Her knee gently brushes up against mine, and she quickly apologizes. I just smile and turn to list to Ms. Bailik talk to us about her plans for the year, and how she thinks this class is going to work. I look over, and Olivia is smiling. It's only slightly, but it's nice. I've never seen her smile before, and it feels good to see her smile even if it's just slightly.
When the bell rings I try to help Olivia find he next class. She has photography with Mr. Woodburn. I know where his room is because it's right by the pottery studio. We get to his room, and I tell her that I will get her after class to help her find her next class. I have a free period now. I go to the library, and find a copy of A Room Of Ones Own by Virginia Woolf. I sit down, and start reading. I get a text from Christopher.
"Am I taking the two of you home?"
"Yeah," I text back, and get back to the book. Our library was recently renovated, and it now has these huge windows. They let in so much natural light, and it's such a beautiful day. It feels like your outside, but you have the luxury of air conditioning.
"Olivia seems nice." Christopher texts me.
"Yeah she is."
The bell rings, and I collect my stuff. I go back to Mr. Woodburn's room to get Olivia.
"What class do you have next?" I ask.
"AP Bio."
"Oh me too."
We walk to Mrs. Galvin's room. She has a strange room. It's covered in posters that say things like "E stands for effort not excuses," and "You learn something everyday IF you pay attention." Olivia picks a seat at a lab table in the front, and I go to the back. I'm assuming that she likes science, and she seems excited to get started in class. Mrs. Galvin starts talking, and Olivia seems to get lost in her words, and I can't take my eyes off of her. The way she leans forward with her arms on the table, and with her hands clasped together. She's mesmerizing.
