The bell eventually rings, and we walk out together, and Olivia waves as she walks away. She goes to Photography, and I go to the library for my free period. I pull out my calculus homework, my notes that Christopher helped me with, and my calculator. I get started on my work, and try not to get too stressed. I have 20 questions to get through. I finish about 13 of them before I can't possibly focus on math anymore. I close my textbook, and go back to the back shelf in the library, and find the Virginia Woolf book I started reading yesterday.
When my free period is eventually over I collect my things, and walk to the classroom for Bio. I take my seat in the back, and open up my textbook. I look up, and see Jasper coming closer, and closer. He takes a seat next to me.
"Hey Elser," he says cooly.
"What do you want Jasper?" I say back to him. There is no reason Jasper would ever sit next to me unless he wanted something.
"Well since you asked. I was wondering if you could tell me about Olivia. You know the things she likes, and the things she doesn't like."
"Ew, disgusting, no," I say, and turn my attention back to Mrs. Galvin as she explains the lab we're doing today. When she finally finished explaining she set out all the materials, and told us to get to work. She also mentioned that we would be working with the people we were sitting with. I don't like Jasper at all, and the thought of having to work with him on this is awful.
"Come on just tell me one thing about her," he kept pushing me, and I am reaching my breaking point.
"Jasper if you care so much just ask her yourself," he nods his head looking somewhat defeated. "Now can you please focus on this lab?" The rest of the class was mainly just the two of us recording our data. It wasn't too bad mainly because Jasper didn't talk all that much. I stuff my textbook back in my bag, and fling it over my shoulder as I walk out of the classroom.
When I get into the pottery studio Samantha waves me over to have a seat next to me. I place my bag at the door on top of the pile of backpacks.
"Hey Sam."
"Hi, that new girl...Olivia I think her name is. Jasper is trying to get her interested."
"Yeah. It's annoying, but that's Jasper."
"He texted me last night. He was saying that he was over me, and he has a new girl now," she says shaking her head. "When will he learn that I was never into him at any point."
"He thinks everyone wants him. Dear god he's annoying," Samantha nods her head, and I go grab an apron. I put the apron on, and grab the vase I made yesterday. I place it on the cart so it can be fired. I go back, and pull out a lump of clay. I throw it on the wheel, and start to form it into the shape of a small mug. When I get the shape I want I take my wire cutter, and cut it from the bat. I take it over to the table, and sit next to Samantha. I start to draw sprigs of lavender in the sides of the mug. It takes a while, but I finally finish drawing all of the lavender sprigs. When I finish I put the mug in my locker so that it can dry. I take off my apron, and go wash my hands. As I'm drying my hands off my phone buzzes in my pocket. I pull it out, and look at the message from Dad.
"We talked to Dr. Nordin, and she was able to push your first treatment up to Friday," I read. That means that I will have to cut my hair soon. I run my fingers through the locks of hair on my head. A tear comes to my eye, and I quickly wipe it away. It's just hair. It's not who I am. I walk back to the classroom. The bell rings, and I wave a goodbye to Mr. Keaton, and quickly walk out of the classroom.
I take my seat at the front of the room in Mr. Bernard's class. Mr. Bernard looks up from his desk. We lock eyes, and he furrows his brow. He walks over to me, and sits in the chair next to me it that weird backwards "cool teacher" way.
"What's going on?" He asks me looking quite concerned.
"Paul I would tell you, but I can't take you seriously when you sit like that," I say with a chuckle.
"Good one," he says, and walks back to his desk. "If you need to talk I'm here," he says as Christopher walks in. He take his seat next to me.
"What's wrong," he asks me in a hushed tone.
"Later," I mouth as Mr. Bernard begins class. He begins by handing out our copies of our books. We each hand him our homework as he walks around the class giving us the book.
"Ok guys. This is a dense book, and it may be difficult to get through. So in that case we're going to start reading it together. Your homework will be to read, and annotate the first two chapters. You have until Thursday to complete it. I will be checking annotations, but not as much as last year. Since you are all capable I expect you to be able to annotate correctly without my help. Is that clear?" There's a jumbled mix of words of agreement. "Good. With that let get started on your reading." We are only able to get through the first few pages before it's time to go.
"Delilah. Can you stay back for a moment please?" Mr. Bernard says. I nod, and walk over to his desk. "What's going on?" He asks me.
"My first chemo got pushed up a little bit. I'm really fine."
"Ok. Well if you need anything I'm here for you," I nod, and walk out of the classroom. Before going to the lunchroom I put my earbuds in, and turn on some music. I just need a moment to myself without the noise and chaos of the lunchroom.
When the song ends I walk into the lunchroom, and Olivia waves me over.
"You'll never believe what just happened," she says laughing. I look up, and Christopher is laughing too.
"What happened?" I ask somewhat confused.
"Olivia just turned Jasper down."
"He was so mad. He walked back over to his table, and his buddies were trying to up his self respect," Olivia added with a smile.
"I love that," I say as I take a seat in between the two of them. "If you don't mind me asking why did you turn him down. He's an asshole, but he was nice to you."
"Not my type," she says simply, and takes a bite of her sandwich. I smile, and I can't pull my eyes off of her. I suddenly feel a sharp pain in my shins. I stifle a yelp, and turn to glare at Christopher.
"Stare much?" He mouths with a smirk. I shake my head, and turn my head to face forward, but I keep my attention on her as we all talk through our short break before it's back to the grind.
