My heart is pounding as our fingers are interlaced, and I'm praying that she can't feel how fast my heart is beating through my hand, and fingertips. Everything in me is pounding loudly in my ears. Her hand is in mine. I can feel the warmth of her skin, and the intricacy of my hands. We continue our walk hand in hand. We finally get back to her house.
"My dad is working the night shift tonight," she says. "Do you want to stay for dinner?"
"I'll have to ask my dads," I say, and pull out my phone. I text Pop, and ask him if I can have dinner at Olivia's. As I wait for his response Olivia takes my hand, and pulls me into her house. She takes Hugo's leash off, and he runs to his bed. Olivia is feeding Hugo when I get a response from Pop.
"Sure, but come get your homework so that you can be productive."
"Olivia I'm going to go get my homework. I'll be back in five," I say, and walk out the door. I walk up the street, and cross to my house. I walk in, and quickly grab my bag. I walk downstairs, and wave bye to Pop as I walk out the door.
When I get back to Olivia's house I knock on her door. She comes to the door. She changed into sweatpants and a tank top. She opens the door, and I walk in, and take my shoes off.
"We can work in my room if you want."
I nod, and we walk up to her room. She sits on her bed with her feet out in front of her. She pats the spot next to her. I open my bag, and pull out my Psych homework. I sit next to her, and start to read and highlight the packet we were given. I'm trying to focus on my reading when I notice that Olivia has started to move closer to me. I slide my knees up, and place my binder on top of my knees. I continue to read, and do my best to focus on my reading, and not the fact her leg is in the space my leg created why I pulled my knees closer to my chest.
She closes her trigonometry text book, and she puts her calculator away. She rotates her body so that she's facing me, and I force myself to keep my eyes on the page. Out of the corner of my eye I see her pull her legs to her chest, and she places her chin on her knees. I finish annotating my packet, and I put it back in my binder, and close it.
She take my hand, and holds it. She makes me unfurl my fingers. WhenI do she starts to draw circles on my palm. She looks up a me like she's asking me something. I don't know what my face looks like, but she lets go of my hand, and get up. She walks over to her record player, and puts a record on.
"Who is this?" I ask as the song begins.
"The Zombies."
I nod, and she sits back down on her bed.
"What do you want for dinner?" She asks me. I shrug.
"I can make a lentil soup."
"Ok."
The song changes, and Olivia perks up.
"This is my favorite song from the record."
She grabs my hand "dance with me?" She asks, and I nod. I stand up, and she wraps her arms around my waist. I drape my arms over her shoulders. She places her head on my chest, and we sway to the song together. I know that she can hear just how loud my heart is pounding right now. When the song ends we stop swaying, and she just stands there for a few seconds; still holding onto me. The next song starts, and she goes to take the record off.
"I'm going to go start cooking," she says, and heads downstairs. I stand there in shock. That really just happened, and I didn't make a move. I had the perfect opportunity, and I didn't do a thing. I flop onto her bed, and cover my face with my hands. I can't believe I let that all happen, and I didn't use the opportunity that I clearly had.
I stand up, and make the decision that i'm going to go down there, and do it. I'm not going to chicken out. I go into the bathroom that is next to her room, and make sure that I look ok. I walk downstairs, and I'm about to walk into the kitchen when I see her in there on her own. She has her hair up in a messy bun, and she's moving around the kitchen. She is so focused, and in her element. I stand there for a little bit just watching her.
After a few minutes I walk off the stairs, and stand in the doorway to the kitchen. She eventually looks up at me.
"What?"
"Nothing," I tell her with a smile. She nods, and goes back to dicing up a clove of garlic. She tosses the chopped up pieces into the pot, and looks at her feet. I'm about to walk over to her when she quickly walks over to me. She grabs the back of my neck with her hands, and pulls my head down slightly. She stands on her toes, and kisses me. I grab her chin, and I feel her smile against my lips. Then just as quickly as she walked over to me she goes back to the big pot. The only thing that makes me sure of what just happened is the fact that there is still a tingling feeling on my lips.
I don't know what to say so I go into the living room, and sit down next to Hugo. He places his head in my lap, and gives me his puppy dog eyes. I chuckle, and stroke his head.
"Delilah, can you come put some bowls out?" Olivia asks from the other room.
"Yep," I say, and she points to where the bowls are. I put two bowls out on the small round table. I walk back over to Olivia. She turns to me smiling.
"What?" She asks through a small laugh. I smile, and walk behind her. I wrap my arms around her waist, and kiss the side of her head. She touches one of my hands with her free one. She turns the stove off, and turns around to face me. She runs her fingers through my hair, and places a hand on each side of my face.
"Beautiful girl," she says quietly.
"You're one to talk," I say back, and she smiles up at me. In that moment I wasn't thinking about the cancer, or chemo. I was thinking about the girl I was holding in my arms. I lean down, and connect our lips. I hear her release a small sigh, and her hands start to run through my hair as she continues to kiss me back. I don't want to have to pull away, but I do. We're both breathing heavy, and I can't take my eyes off of her.
"Grab the bowl," she says, and I nod. I grab both bowls, and she ladles the soup she made out, and equally distributes it between the two bowls. We sit down at the table. She's holding onto my hand while we eat.
When we finish eating we put our dishes next to the sink. I go back to her room to grab my backpack. She grabs my hand.
"Do you really have to go?" She asks me with a pout.
"Yes. I do, but I'll see you tomorrow," she nods, and we head downstairs. She holds my hand the entire time. I walk to the door, and pat Hugo on the head. I hug Olivia, and kiss the top of her head. I walk home, and I can't stop smiling. I walk into my house, and see that my dads are cleaning up the kitchen after they just ate.
"How was it?" Dad asks me.
"Good, I'm going to bed," I say, and walk upstairs.
