The rest of the day was a boring blur. They're really starting to pile on that homework. Not to mention the fact that I still have to apply to college in the midst of all of this. When I got out of Spanish Sam was there waiting for me like she said she would be.
"Can you hold this for a second?" She says handing me her lunch bag. She pulls her keys out of her backpack, and we walk into the parking lot. "I'm parked near the back," we reach her car, and my jaw drops.
"YOU HAVE A CADILLAC?"
"My mom's new boyfriend is trying to get me to like him more."
I chuckle, and climb into the car. She starts the car, and starts playing some music. We ride i silence for a little with the music playing quietly in the background.
"So where does your brother go to school?"
"He goes to Horizon Academy. My mom wanted to send both of us to private school, but I didn't want to leave Greely."
I nod, and she pulls into the parking lot of Horizon, and we wait for her brother to come out. I have my hand on the center console, and I feel Samantha's arm lightly touching mine. I can feel the backs of our hands gently pressed together. I can feel my heart rate pick up. She quickly snakes her hand into mine. She squeezes my hand, and waves to her brother. I started to pull my hand away from hers, but she just grabbed it again, held on tighter. I look at our intertwined fingers resting on the center console, and felt my cheeks flush.
"Do you want to have dinner at my house? We could study, or watch a movie maybe?" Sam asks me. I want to tell her that I have a reservation with my Elliot Smith albums, and a box of tissues. But when I look down into her hazel eyes, and see the hopefulness she's desperately trying to hide I can't stop myself from nodding. The back door opened, and in climbed a young boy that looked just like Sam except his eyes were a rich green.
"Hey Noah, this is Delilah," Sam says turning in her seat to look at her brother. "How was school?"
"I got a 92 on my math test." He mumbled unenthusiastically. Sam gave me a look that said see what I have to deal with, and I held back my laugh as she pulled out of the parking lot. Noah is on his phone while Sam and I ride in a comfortable silence with some music softly playing in the background. I don't feel like I have to calculate everything like I do with Olivia. The drive was about ten minutes, and when we pulled into the entrance of a development I met Sam's eyes
"I never thought your family would be the type to live in a development." I observed.
She just shrugged and said "Mom thinks it's safer." We pulled into her driveway, and Noah practically sprinted into the house. Sam took my hand again and led me inside. She pulled me into the kitchen; tracing a line on my finger while our hands were intertwined. She let go of my hand to open up a cabinet, and the warmth I had felt dissipated almost instantly. She was standing one her tiptoes trying to grab a bag of popcorn. I gently placed my hand on her arm.
"I'll get it," I told her, and grabbed the bag quickly. "So what do you want to do?" I asked after she had opened the bag, and poured the contents into two bowls.
"I don't know, maybe work on the homework for calc, watch a movie, bake something." She said nonchalantly.
"What were you thinking of baking?"
"Cookies, or maybe some muffins." she answered, and popped a few pieces of popcorn into her mouth.
"That would be nice, but I think I might need some help with the calc homework beforehand, and I have to call my dad so he doesn't worry." I tell her, and she nods.
