_________________________________________________________________Yeah, mum’s still fucked up and I am too and so is the whole situation with this family but for the love of God, I could not stop smiling today. It hung in the back of my mind that I was probably setting myself up for a downfall, but at the moment I didn’t really care because all I could think about was Hayden.
I went throughout the day cheerful and smiling; people at school thought I was insane or something. Lea knew why though and so we had fun talking about boys for most of the time.
I should’ve known that the feeling wasn’t going to last.
The end of day bell goes and I rush out of the classroom to my locker as usual; grabbing my books and racing to my car. I hoped maybe Hayden was waiting for me in the car park but he wasn’t. I drive to Riley’s school as usual, parking out the front and walking in.
He wasn’t at our usual meeting place so I walked across the oval to the playground, keeping my eyes peeled for his little brown head. He wasn’t there either and a tiny bit of panic started to set in; this didn’t feel right. I half ran to his classroom, trying to keep myself composed. His teacher was inside.
“Hi,” she greets me as I rush in. “How are you?”
“I’m great thanks, how are you?” I reply as patiently as I can.
“I’m very well. What can I do for you?” She asks.
“Do you happen to know where Riley is? I can’t find him anywhere.” I ask calmly but my heart pounds against my chest.
The teachers face turns kind of puzzled. “His mother came and picked him up in the afternoon –,”
My heart plummets to my feet.
“—she said he had a dentist appointment.”
My mind races. No, he didn’t have an appointment. There was no reason mum should’ve pulled him out of school early. For fuck sake, not this again...
“Are you okay?” The teacher asks, standing up from behind her desk.
“No...” I mumble, pushing a hand against my forehead, trying to think clearly. “He shouldn’t have gone with her. Why did you let her take him?” I muttered over and over again. Jesus Christ, pull yourself together.
The teacher now looks extremely concerned. “She is his legal guardian. Is everything all right?”
“No, it’s not.” I reply angrily even though I know I shouldn’t – it’s not her fault, they don’t know any better. “I have to go.”
I turn and leave, trying to gather my thoughts as I run back to the car. Tears blur my vision and I fumble with the keys whilst trying to open the door. This cannot be happening again.
I pull out my phone and call Hayden. I don’t know how I expect him to help but I need a rational mind to make decisions for me. He answers after three rings.
“To what do I owe this pleasure?” He asks.
I ignore him. “Riley’s gone.”
“What?” His voice turns serious.
“She took him!” I choke, trying to keep the tears from falling. “I don’t know where he is... She’s done this before – she just grabbed him and took off. They could be anywhere...”
“Just take a deep breath,” Hayden instructs. “Where are you?”
“In t-the car outside his s-school.” I reply.
