POV: Anita Johnson
Kim spent the weekend at mines. Watched her learn things from my mom and Nick. They loved having her around, even dad loved Kim. Time moved a lot faster with her around.
"Hurry!" Mom shouted from downstairs.
The smell of great food filled the stairway and hit my nose. I bet my legs were floating and my nose was leading.
For the first time in a long time mom had everything under control, including setting up the table and having a real smile on her face.
She begged us not to touch our plates toll her special guest arrived. Okay mom.
"A few more minutes," She said checking her time.
A knock on the door made her face glow in excitement.
Melissa walked in, followed by Aunt Zoey and that's it. That's all we need to be happy.
"How are you this pretty?" Mom asked gently cupping her face and making Nick cringe.
"I don't know," She laughed shyly.
"You are really pretty!" Mom said as she gave her some love. She's officially part of the crew.
"I need some love too, tell me I'm still pretty with these wrinkles!" Aunt Zoey exclaimed. I have to admit, she still is.
Everyone finally settled in to dig in.
"There is too much happening for us to have an actual toast, so I'll just say cheers to all the great things in life." Mom said.
Like any family gathering, It was a custom to embarrass the visitor's closest friend and poor Nick had it very hard.
We roasted Nick with his childhood picture, sleep talks and every stupid thing he has done and of course mom got to share a little about the Nick in love.
It felt good, being happy with family felt good.
Melissa and I cleared the table after the lunch. Mom and aunt seemed to be catching up on everything and I bet Kimberly and Nick were planning to murder River.
"You dating Kimberly Parker?" Melissa asked.
"Yes I am..." I giggled, I didn't expect her to call Kimberly with her government names.
"I always suspected that! Y'all are amazingly cute together!" She smiled.
"All the times I asked Nick about you the answer was always the same, 'She is with Kimberly'" I laughed as he imitated Nick.
I loved Melissa for how soft she was and how she seemed to soften Nick too. She was not loud but always heard. The best thing!
She helped me prepare the bowls of desert and we just chilled had the best time and the best part is how happy mom was. Her laugh echoed in her home and it was just perfect.
"Excuse me, lemme take my baby home.
Her parents don't want her coming after the dark." Nick said."Come here Mel." Mom called. She whispered into her ear and from Mel's reaction it was something sweet.
"Thank you my daughter!" Mom patted her shoulder.
It was very sweet! I wish Kimberly's mother was alive, I wish I could hear all Kimberly's baby stories. I don't really know what I would do with her but I kinda wish she was here to figure that out. We would have a gotten along perfectly.
"You okay?" Kimberly asked.
I looked at her for a while, how happy I seemed to make her and how cool my childhood turned out because If her and yes... I believe her moms soul is attached to hers. She's just too perfect to be one.
"Yeah, I just had a great time." I smiled.
"Wanna dance?" She asked letting out a hand.
"Yeah!" I replied grabbing on to it.
"I Love you baby!" I whispered.
"I love you times !" Kimberly said.
"Never! I love you more" I snapped.
"If your mom was not here I would've kissed that chicky attitude off" She smirked.
"Let's take a walk." I suggested.
"Mom, Kim and I will be back within an hour." I said but mom looked deep into the conversation she was having with her sister.
Kimberly and I dashed out. It was a bit chilly since the sun was going down. We walked hand in hand talking about lives now compared to when we were still kids.
"Baby tomorrow is Saturday, wanna fill up the pool?" Kimberly asked with a silly smirk.
Argh of course she'll tease me about things mom reminded us of.
"I haven't tried swimming since the 8th grade" I laughed.
I hate swimming because Kim and I went swimming in the community pool and I almost drowned. I choked from the water after being told that the kids pee there. It was disgusting so I pledged that i was not going to swim ever.
"Nope!!!" I laughed.
I felt unsafe, Fear over came me.
"Let's go home baby." I requested.
"We just went out, What's up?" Kim asked.
"I am scared" I smiled shyly.
"That's okay, Abort mission!" She screamed and we ran back home.
She imitated the emergency sirens and it had to be they funniest thing.
