A quiet, peaceful place to think was all you yearned for right now. Your fellow kin chatted and bickered amongst themselves for what seemed like days. In fact, you were sure that it had been days that they continued the mindless squabbling. You hadn't been invited on this quest, Thorin Oakenshield's quest to reclaim the mountain in the east. You had merely been traveling for work when you stumbled upon the group of twelve, a hobbit, and the wizard. Work after the fall of the mountain was hard enough to come by but with the Orc infested lands it was more limited. Not many Dwarves traveled as you had, many settled in one of two places. The Blue Mountains, where Thorin had taken those who would follow or The Iron Hills, where Dain welcomed his kin with enthusiasm. You had decided to travel after many a year in The Iron Hills.
Traveling was a menace with all of the gear you needed to properly do a job but you managed. You would find a small town, village, or a passing home and inquire of a needed weapons dealer and many times you were met with sales and a profit. Other times you were less than welcome. You had remembered the times you had spent in Erebor, the grand halls, and endless work and you missed those times. When the dragon came, you had lost everything. Your closest family, your home, scarred in more ways than one as the fire of the serpent managed to leave one hell of a scar on your back. You despised this great beast but you are only one and never would have even fathomed trying to return to the mountain.
You could still remember meeting this misfit group of thirteen as the wizard wasn't around at the time. You had managed to stumble across a nasty group of scouting wargs and Orcs, they were few in number but nasty in temper. As they always were.
"That should be the last of ye' ugly bastards." You gave your axes a hearty swing to rid them of the blood before placing them on your back once more.
"Can never get a moment's rest without ye' gettin' in my way." You managed a deep huff before straightening up and starting down the trail again.
It was a flash of flesh and steel as the dwarf barrelled into you sending both of you skidding down the path a few feet.
"Watch where yer goin'!" was the first response and grabbing your backside in pain you snapped right back.
"I was but you certainly were not! I was on a path, a trail," you pointed towards the ground before crossing your arms over your chest.
"But ye were runnin' straight from the forest for Durin's sake! And I am to watch where I'm goin'?" You recognized him, the burly dwarf was an old friend of yours from ages back.
"I needn't be running if the Orcs weren't so loud but I see ya took care of that." He said calming himself down.
"Dwalin, what brings ye' all this way east? Not a dwarf without the skill but not many of us tries their hand at traveling this way alone." You offered him a hand and he shook it firmly.
"Come back to camp, Lass, and I can explain." Camp? You had a feeling deep in your gut that this wasn't going to end well for you.
Making your way through the small thicket of trees and bushes you found yourself in for quite a treat. Many eyes turned to greet their friend as he came back to camp, leaving post only to find the replacement for the next hours guard. They weren't however expecting more company. You were bombarded with questions and comments, so much so that you couldn't tell who was saying what or what they were even asking of you.
"Lads, I haven't the ears of an elf now so slow your tongues and talk one at a time." You snapped, quite a temper, and quite stubborn was bred within your blood.
It was a long night but only one of many before you found yourself crossing paths with this company again and again. You had finally given up traveling alone and what a mistake that had been. The silence of solo travel was sounding like heaven compared to this rowdy bunch of men.
"Lass, I have a question and now don't take this the wrong way or nothin' but why aren't you settled down?" Bofur asked trying to sound casual and you offered him a brief glance.
"Where was I to go? We have no home, no place that is ours. The iron hills were closest but they offered me no comfort, the blue mountains where ye' all departed were exceedingly far to travel alone in light of the recent events." You sparred a glance at the wizard, he looked grim.
Ah, this wizard knew far more than he seemed.
"I haven't a family anymore after that serpent attacked so I made a living the best way I was taught. Travel and sale, forge, and keep going." You stretched your sore limbs as you stood.
"Now if ye' would allow me the time, I believe a stream cuts through the trees nearby and I need some time to think." You offered Bofur a smile before turning towards where Dwalin sat on guard duty.
"Lass, where are ye' headed?" He asked quickly as you passed by.
"The stream, time to clean me, and to think." He gave a curt nod and you continued to the stream.
"It has been an age now, hasn't it?" You stripped down and stepped into the cool water. You submerged for a moment before standing up again, running the water over your arms to get some of the dried mud and caked blood off of them.
"Whoever watches me shall have his beard removed by my hand if he continues." You threatened without turning, you could hear him but you didn't know which him it was.
"It is only an old friend." He mused and you felt the heat rise to your cheeks.
"And why would my old friend be spying on me?" You asked with a laugh hearing his deep chuckle in response made you shiver.
"I thought you were on guard duty?" You asked as you heard the water splash with every step towards you he took.
"Thorin's turn." You could feel him behind you now.
"Dwalin, why are you really here with me?" You were shy now, something about being this exposed to a man you were so close to years ago and still harbored deep feelings for made you shy.
"I missed you, deeply so." He admitted and you were silent. You felt his hands rest on your shoulders and let him turn you around.
"I, do you mean that?" You searched the warriors' eyes for the truth and your doubt was silenced in a kiss. It wasn't rough, but a soft kiss placed on your lips by a man who meant his words.
"Why didn't you tell me all those years ago? I would have followed you! I would have traveled to The Blue Mountains with you!" You were exasperated, you could've been with him this whole time and he was just now telling you this.
"Seeing death, feeling fear, that is why I tell you now. I had no intention on telling you because I know there is no certainty in this quest or me returning to anywhere we dwarves call home now." His large hand found its way into your wet hair as he kept talking.
"I realized, with some help from my brother of course, that I could offer you at least the truth." A smirk tugged at his lips.
"And judging by the haste in your kiss you feel the same." You scowled before putting your arms around him and your head resting on his chest.
"Silence your tongue, you sneaky dwarf." You grumbled into his chest feeling it reverberate with his laughter.
"Are ye' clean yet, Lass?" You pulled yourself from his arms.
"Ay, I suppose we should head back to the others." You went to walk by him and he grabbed your arm again.
"What-" He silenced you again with another kiss.
"You could have simply asked for another." It was your turn to silence him and with a few more pecks you finally moved away from him and dressed with him at your side.
"What were you two doing?" Kili suggested nudging his brother who gave you both a wink to which Dwalin did not acknowledge. Walking back to the camp took some time as he suggested making it quietly official. Nothing with Dwarves is quiet as many would learn.
"Are those Dwalin's beads?" You gave Bofur a warning in the way you looked at him.
"The next to ask will lose both his beard and then his life," You smiled.
"In that order." The mumbling continued but between you and Dwalin not a sole dare say another word.
