One week later, Amulya wasn't still replying to his texts. Except for the occasional hello while passing in the hallway, they didn't exchange any words. Amulya wasn't even coming home every evening. As the days passed her work timings increased.
She was now coming home every other day, always staying on call when needed.
That evening when she came home from the hospital, she saw Reagan with a bag in the hallway. Her arm was still in a cast; she was slightly wincing, but still smiled at Amulya.
"What did I say about lifting weights?" She asked smiling at the blonde. After their talk in the lift, they bumped into each other a couple of times, and Amulya didn't dislike Reagan as much as she did previously.
"It's not that heavy" she rolled her eyes and added "Finally moving out and living on my own."
"Be careful" Amulya told her and before she can say anymore Reagan cut her off.
"I know the drill, doc. I've heard is just about a million times" The girls laughed.
"Don't let him go" Reagan said out of the blue.
"What?"
"Acting dumb won't get you anywhere. Just say yes" with that Reagan changed the topic, noticing that Alaric came out of his apartment and was now locking the door.
"Ready?" he asked without looking up. He still hasn't noticed Amulya standing there.
"Yeah, Just saying goodbye" She said suddenly hugging Amulya and whispering in her ear "Don't over think"
"Good bye to wh− oh hey Amy" He waved at the girl. She smiled back at him. Things were awkward between then after that day when Amulya called them to have dinner.
"Let's go. Bye Amy, take care" She said and they both left.
Amulya waved at the blonde and went inside her apartment as the lift door closed. She showered and looked into her fridge. No groceries. She had to go to the store and get some. She sighed. She was so tired all she wanted to do was sleep. She suddenly missed her mother.
After a shower, Amulya curled in her bed with a cup of tea. It was pretty early, but she hadn't slept in a while. The tea settled down her hunger slightly and she slid down the blankets and closed her eyes. But she wasn't as sleepy.
The tea was a bad idea.
Say yes. She heard Reagan's voice in her head. Say yes to what? She decided not to over think and tried to sleep. This time she fell asleep.
Amulya woke up next morning as usual and started her day. It was going to be super long. She decided to drink some coffee as breakfast and started to work. She still had thirty minutes before she had to be on the train.
As she was walking towards the lift she saw that Alaric's door was again open and he was on the couch working on his laptop.
"How does it feel to live alone again?" She asked him leaning against his door. He took a sip out of his drink before answering her.
"It isn't much different. Reagan almost never comes out of her room" he shrugged.
"Oh!" she said not knowing what else to say.
"You look tired, did you get enough sleep?"
"No, not that much" She sighed. Alaric frowned.
"Are you okay? Talk to me, you have been avoiding me for the past week."
She didn't know what to say. Sure she had been avoiding him. She didn't know what to do with her sudden feelings or how to react, so she did the next best thing, avoided him. Then at least she doesn't have to face him and the feelings that were completely new to her.
"I was just busy" She told him.
"I understand. I just felt like it's my fault; like I did something wrong."
"No you didn't. I was dealing with something."
He was about to say something but was interrupted when her stomach growled.
"Did you eat breakfast yet?" She shook her head.
"I ran out of groceries" She said sheepishly.
"Don't tell me you skipped dinner too" He narrowed his eyes at her. She just smiled at shyly.
"Come on. I'm not letting you leave without eating something" She looked at the time knowing she still had time to eat some breakfast.
"Sure. Thank you" She entered the house following him into the living room.
"I made some toast, hope you like it" he told her.
"Yeah anything is fine"
"Lucky to have me as a neighbour, no?" he asked halfway through breakfast.
"Yes I agree. You are the best neighbour" She chuckled.
"And the coolest?"
"Yes, Alaric"
"And the hottest?" She almost choked on the toast. When her eyes met his, he was smiling; his blue eyes were looking at her as if he was trying to look into her soul, trying to figure out what she was thinking.
They just stared at each other, just like they did the other night.
"Yes, Alaric" She breathed.
