*Ping!* I get a text from Kath and quickly check it.

KATH: WE'RE COMING HOME. THEY WON'T LET US BE WITH LISA 😔 😢 WE'LL BE HOME SOON.

ME: OKAY, SEE YOU SOON. LOVE YOU. ❤️

KATH: YOU TOO.

I sigh and collapse onto the couch where Amy and Lauren are mindlessly watching TV. We're all worried about Lisa, so we distract ourselves with trashy television. This happens anytime our anxiety is rackets up. As I sit there, not even paying attention to the screen, I can't help but envision Lisa, all alone in the hospital bed, with none of us there with her, in pain and struggling to breathe. I imagine her alone for weeks on end while she suffers. The nurses can't even be with her. Comfort her. And we might never see her again. Before I know it tears are streaking down my face. I don't even notice them, but Amy, alerted by the sound of my sniffling, comes over and leans her small body into mine, resting her hand on my shoulder. "Aw, Chris," she says softly. "Lisa will be fine. Before we know it, she'll be back home. We're all worried right now, but she'll be fine."

"No Ames, you don't understand," I choke out, fully sobbing now. "This disease isn't just any sickness, it's deadly. Millions of people are dying. Millions of strong, healthy people. Lisa is just a statistic in the medical world now. Why would she be any different?" Amy just looks at me, then at Lauren, who is silent.

We sit there, and slowly, a tear rolls down Amy's face as it sinks it. Lisa is not okay.
