Part 23: An Inevitable Confrontation

Lapis Pov:

Placing myself down in my seat I sat up straight, feeling strangely optimistic about the day ahead, for once I actually paid attention in my first class of the day. I write notes in my previously empty notebook, filling up several pages as the class goes on, occasionally when I have a quick break I draw little doodles of fish and water droplets at the sides of my pages. Once the class wraps up I happily stuff my things back into my bag, I walk out into the hall with an ever so slight grin on my face as I head to my next class.

Sitting in my next class I take a minute to look out the window, I stare at the softly shaped clouds as they pass by in the bright blue sky, I lean my cheek in my palm as I stare. When the class finishes for lunch I sling my bag onto my shoulder, heading out into the hall, much like this morning, with a slight grin on my face, excited to see Peridot again.

Though as I walk into the hall I freeze in my tracks. I stare in shock as standing at the end of the hall, between me and the cafeteria, is Jasper leaning against the wall. He slowly turns to look at me, standing up off of the wall as he does. He starts making his way down the hall towards me, I stand frozen in place, my heart pounding in my chest as I anticipate what's to come.

Oh god, oh god, I can't run away this time, there's nowhere for me to go! He grows closer and closer, a look of anger on his face, a look that brings back so many horrible memories. He walks up directly in front of me, staring down at me with his imposing amber eyes,

"So I see you're back huh, Lazuli" I just stare up at him, sweat starting to build up on my forehead,

"Nothing to say eh? That's surprising, considering how good at being a complete bitch you were" I avert my eyes to the floor, speaking up quietly in a slightly timid voice,

"What... What do you want Jasper?" he scoffs at me, leaning his head down closer to me,

"What do I want? I want to know what the fuck you're doing back here?! What could someone like you possibly have to gain from coming back here?" I keep my eyes on the floor as I reply,

"... That's none of your business Jasper..." he scoffs again, louder this time,

"What, does it have something to do with Peridot?" my eyes widen slightly and I look up at him a little,

"Oh, what, did you think I didn't see how she looked at you yesterday? You two all buddy-buddy or something now? You why she's been acting all weird lately?"

I stare up at him, the look in his eyes bringing back too many memories, after a second he speaks up again,

"Not got some clever response this time? Not gonna try and put me down for trying to be myself?" I grip my wrist tightly at his remark,

"It's not my fault that being yourself makes you an unlikable ass..." his eyes widen in anger and he grabs my arm, pulling me closer to him,

"Listen, princess, you may think you're oh-so-perfect, but how many people actually like you? 'Cause it seems like no one here does" I wrench my arm out of his grasp, pushing him as far away from me as I can,

"Well apparently more than you, considering Peridot used to be your friend only because she was scared of you, clearly knowing how much of a complete ass you are!" he clenches his teeth and swiftly brings his fist down, colliding with my face.

Staring down at the floor in slight shock, I feel a warm, wet sensation coming from my nose as the pain in my cheek starts to set in. I look up at Jasper, he's holding his fist up in front of him, a slight red mark on his knuckle,

"God, why don't you ever just stay quiet?! It's like you have a natural talent for pissin' me off" I stare up at him, a drop of the blood from my nose dripping onto the floor,

"I can see why she was so uncomfortable yesterday, you just never change..." he scoffs and grabs my shoulders, driving his knee up into my stomach. He spits on the floor next to me as I collapse to my knees, he turns away and walks down the hall, mumbling something under his breath. I sit there clenching my stomach as pain pulses throughout my body, I slowly fall onto my side, the warm sensation still present in my nose.

After a minute or two of lying on the floor I feel myself gradually begin to lose consciousness, my eyes slowly begin to drift closed, despite my attempts to keep them open. As I lay there slowly drifting off into a pain induced sleep I spot Peridot turn the corner and walk into the hall, a confused look on her face. The second she spots me her eyes widen and she starts to run down the hall towards me, calling out to me as she runs,

"Lapis?!" though just before she can get to me I feel myself drift off into unconsciousness.
