It was only a few hours until Clara would be leaving her home to go into the woods and possibly never return. She sat on the edge of her bed staring at the dress she'd bought the day previously with her Mother. Butterflies were going crazy in her stomach, to the point where she thought she was going to be physically sick. A light knock on the door brought her out of her trance and back to reality.
"Come in." She spoke gently, Jane creaked the door open and poked her head through the door.
"You want some help? Dinner will be ready soon and you need to be ready to leave once we've finished." Clara looked from her sister to her dress and nodded her head. She was currently sat in her dressing gown; with the lingerie she'd bought underneath. Jane stepped into the room and closed the door behind her. She picked up the dress from the bed and motioned for Clara to stand up. She did as her sister wanted her to and took off the dressing gown. Neither of them spoke, her sister didn't even make a comment about her underwear like Clara thought she would. She stepped into the dress and Jane pulled it up over her body, zipping the back of it up, and then walking round so she was face to face with her sister.
"You look beautiful, I wish I looked like you." Jane's voice was breathy, almost a whisper. She looked at her sister in awe, jealous of her beauty.
"I've dreamed of this day since I was little, but right now I'd do anything to be in your position. I'd do anything to be able to spend one more night here with you guys. I'm scared Jane." Clara's eyes began to well up with tears and she bit the inside of her lip to stop herself from breaking down sobbing. Why wasn't she excited? Why wasn't she happy? This was meant to be the best day of her life, but instead it felt like the worst. Jane pulled her over to the bed and they sat down together.
"You don't have anything to worry about, when you get to the woods tonight and see your mate all your worries will disappear, you'll be the happiest you've ever been. Then you'll go with him, and you'll have to best life because you have your soulmate by your side, supporting you through everything, and loving you no matter what." Jane held her sisters' hand and gave it a squeeze as a tear began to roll down her cheek. She wiped it away with her thumb and put a finger under her chin raising her head so they were looking each other in the eyes.
"Clara, you look beautiful, and you're an amazing person. Any man, whether he's a wolf or not, would be the luckiest being alive to have your love." Jane always said the right thing when her sister needed it best. She may be annoying at times but when she needed to comfort her sister, she knew exactly what to say."Thank you, Jane, will you help me fix my hair? I want it in loose curls, you know, like beach waves?" Clara and Jane giggled a little together, but Jane agreed and helped her sister sort out her hair. Once Jane had finished Clara put a small amount of make up on and then they headed downstairs for dinner.
With every step down the stairs she took her stomach became ever more knotted up. She was filling with emotions. Excitement, worry, and nerves. Butterflies filled her belly. Jane was in front skipping her way down, was her family going to miss her? Or were they happy that she was going? Clara reached the final step and when she turned her head right to face the kitchen, she was in awe at the spread her Mother had laid out on the table. The candles they only got out at Christmas were lined in the middle, there was a full roast laid out with veg and mashed potatoes. A huge smile spread across her face. What a meal to have for her last dinner with her family!
"Mother, it's beautiful, thank you!" Clara voice was breathless. Her Mother spun round and smiled at her, taking in all her daughters' beauty as she did.
"Well, your favourite time of year is Christmas. So, I thought we'd have a Christmas dinner before you left." Her Father opened one of the kitchen cupboards and pulled out a box of Christmas crackers. Clara giggled and tears filled her eyes again, but she tried to hold them back so she wouldn't ruin her make up. They all took a seat around the table, pulled their crackers and put on their paper crowns. It truly felt like Christmas that night for Clara. She wished it would never end. They talked and laughed while eating their dinner, reminiscing over old memories. Her Mother made her promise to call or post letters if she could. Anything to keep updated on how she was doing if they couldn't see each other.
